After work I was able to get out right away for a ride on the Superfly SS. I set my pump down as I was leaving work near 17:00, and left the UNC Wellness Center at 18:06.

Headed over to the Carolina North Trail system, and took a little side trip through UNC Campus. I road by the Morehead Planetarium to take a look at the giant sundial they have out front. Pretty cool:

It was a great ride and a great day! Its awesome when it only gets dark around 21:00. Long rides with no lights.

Vertical Distance: 300.00 yd

Avg HR: 142 BPM

I set the pump back to a normal basal rate as I was rolling back to the Wellness Center at 20:00.

I did set a post ride bedtime bolus tonight.

July starts tomorrow, and with it comes the Tour and the next race in the DirtySpokes endurance series. I am ready for BOTH! :)

After a pretty busy weekend it was cool to try and settle down into a normal work week. Right.

After work I was able to get out on the road bike and join a group on their Monday recovery ride. I missed their start by about 20 minutes, so I tried to calculate an "intercept".

So after about 35 or 4o minutes of riding by myself, listening to my iPod I started to think I should have grabbed my mountain bike and went to the trails instead. I was wondering this ALOUD, when I realized their was a guy right behind me. He was wearing a small messenger bag, and was smiling as he had heard me ranting for about 3 or 4 minutes.

I shut the iPod off, and we chatted for a bit. He recognized the kit, and asked me some questions about diabetes and cycling and what it takes to do the races I do. I asked about what he does, and he is a grad student at UNC and was commuting home to Hillsborough. He is studying about bending and joining molecules via magnetism. Pretty deep, deep stuff.

We chatted for about 20 minutes until I managed to catch the group I was originally planning on joining.

It was cool ride out to them though. Two people, living on completely different paths, able to enjoy a ride in the country. Cycling is just so dang cool.

Out on the Superfly by 10:00 today. Great day for a ride, but the first real hot humid day we have had - well besides J-man's bday party.

Had a great time ripping around on the bike in the Carolina North Trail system, but needed to get home by early afternoon.

Also, took the time to switch the rear tire on my Superfly to a XDX 1.75 from a XDX 2.1. Thing looks TINY, but man it is sooo light. Thought I would give it try for a couple days and see how I like it. The old 2.1 I took off was basically a slick - no tread left at all. Pretty good wear though considering how many road miles I do on my mountain bike.

After a pretty crazy day, I was able to get out on the road bike for a spin after work. I set my temp basal rate to a 55% reduction at 17:00, and was on bike by 18:10. Thought I could get a solid 3hrs in before it got too dark, but it just didn't go as planned.

Although I stayed on a fairly normal fueling schedule, the BG went into the toilet during the first 45 minutes of the ride. I had ZERO effort left for the last 45 minutes. Just a big, huge, struggle to keep the bike moving.

I took the computer off the handlebar and stashed it in my jersey pocket so I won't need to look at it and get further discouraged. I knew I was low, but just couldn't bring it around in enough time to salvage the ride effort.

Heck I look terrible:

Sure enough back to the car and I was <50. Yup. Set my basal rate back to normal and took in some simple carbs via a canned soda pop.

Weather looks good for the weekend, and I should be able to get some makeup hours in over the next couple of days....

After going home and hanging with the boys for a while, I grabbed the Superfly and headed out for a spin on the perfect condition Chapel Hill North trail system.

Pump was set to a 55% reduction at 18:10. BG was a little low right around that same time, so I took a balance of fat and carbs. Hopefully enough to get through the ride.

I left the UNC Wellness Center at 19:15 and rolled towards the trail system. On the way I thought I would just ride around the beautiful town of Chapel Hill some before getting on the gas for the high tempo workout ahead.

I ran into Steve Lackey (owner of Endurance Magazine) on his road bike. I was able to ride with him for a bit. Steve is a great guy, and has his hand in what seems like every local endurance event. Tri's, 5Ks, 10Ks, you name it. One of the greatest things about Chapel Hill - you never know who who you will see just riding around. :)

Social time over, I switched to the big ring and turned up the gas. Left the bike in the big gear for the next 1:15. High tempo, and haulin through the single and double track.

Vertical Distance: 2200 ft.

Switch my pump back to its normal rate on the way back to the car at 21:00.

Man what a GREAT ride. You know, I say this all the time, but the Superfly is one amazing mountain bike. It does everything just perfect. When you are haulin the mail, the bike handles beyond description and climbs like MAD. I LOVE THIS BIKE!!

Set my basal rate to the post ride bedtime rate. Nice day for sure.

On the down side, I am feeling very tired again. I need to get more rest. I can feel just how run down I am, and how much effort it takes to get rolling.

22 June 2009

So me and the boys (J and K) are cruisin' the mall (lookin' for Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! videos) and this group of 8 or 10 college kids walk up.

One of them says "Hey man, aren't you the diabetic who races on the Fisher 29er crew?" ( turns out he has a Paragon and his sister has Type 1).

Before I can answer, my oldest says "Yeah my dad's on the crew, dude!". Everyone burst out laughing!!  It was too funny!! :).

His sister, Julie, is 28 and has been Type 1 for 12 years. She likes cycling and gas done some sprint tris before. Kinda having a harder time know as she is expecting.

Was interesting to hear about her experiences through her brother's eyes.

Plus, I think I found a new agent and publisist. Even if he is only  4. :)

What a nice father's day! The Trek Mod is just a blast!! Can't wait to set up the first series of Mod Elimination Races. :)

Was up a little before 07:00 in order to be at Cycling Spoken Here by 09:00 for a group road ride. My plan was to drive to Lake Crabree County Park with both the Seven and the Superfly. Leave the Superfly there and ride over to the shop to get on the ride. Then, ride back and jump on the mountain bike for a couple of hours.

Was a little concerned when I first tested as I was down in the 40s. Not a great position to be in, given the amount of riding I was planning on getting in today. I took in a mix of complex and simple carbs (pasta and Nutela) along with some protein (turkey) for breakfast.

Set my pump down to the normal pre-ride 55% reduction at 07:20. Left out the door at 08:10.

Was parked on the road bike by 08:30 for the short ride over to the shop.

Felt pretty good for the road ride. Got a little crampy 4 hours or so in, but was able to hop off the bike for 2 minutes and stretch then ride them out.

Fun group to ride with, and fellow 29er Crew member and good friend Marcee jumped in for a bit too.

Once off the road bike, I got a call from that everyone was at the pool. I couldn't take it, and had to go and play with them! I set my pump back to normal at 13:01.

We swam and played in the pool for a couple of hours, and then headed home. Got home a couple of ticks before 16:00 and had a late lunch.

That evening we rolled out to the Durham Bulls game with my sister-in-law and her family. It is always a good time there. K ate his first peanut butter, and my oldest got to run the bases on the field after the end of the game.

Just a super day!!

I set my pump down to its normal post ride sleep time basal rate of a 20% reduction.

The world's most AWESOME wife got me a Trek Mod for father's day.
These things ROCK!! Too much fun!!

Longer stem and carbon bars should be mounted this week. I can't leave
it stock now can I? :).

Man this thing is SOOO COOOOL!!

20 June 2009

An amazing 4th Birthday Party for J today. 35 wonderful friends, and
the Durham Fire Dept with 60,000lbs of ladder truck. Too cool!! The
kids (and some adults) went nuts!!!

Superfly SS hill repeats for 1 hour. Perfect.

Left the UNC Wellness Center parking lot at 19:51. Pump was set to a 55% reduction at 19:10, and BG was at 141 at ride start.

Its a short 10 minute warmup spin over to the base of the hill. 3 minutes up, 2 minute decent recovery.

About 20 minutes in I realized I left my water bottle on the hood of my car. Duh.

Had completed about 7 or 8 trips up and felt the BG just drifting off a bit. I lowered my basal rate to a 80% reduction, and grabbed some simple carbs out of the jersey pocket.

Finished up the hour, and headed home.

Was a good workout and a decent ride given the short time.

When I got back to the car I set my basal rate back to its normal rate, and headed home.

I have a doctor appointment tomorrow as a follow up to the weekend's trip to the ER so I won't be able to ride tomorrow. Hopefully Sat I can get out in the afternoon, but I am really looking forward to big man's BDay party on Sat morning.

Temps turn up for the next 3 days - 97, 99, 98. High humidity. Welcome to the official beginning of summer in NC. :)

I set a temp basal rate at bed time of a 15% reduction for 6 hours.

Headed out on a late start for a post work road bike ride. First ride on the new InForm RXL saddle from Trek. Set my pump down to a 55% reduction at 17:30, and was riding by 18:30.

Light wasn't the problem tonight, approaching storms where. I did a nice base level ride for about 2 hours.

The new saddle was perfect. I just need to lower the saddle about 1mm. Other than that these InForm saddles are the business.

Not making any temp basal changes before bed as I am currently a little high.

Surprise- it just started raining again.

Woke up today feeling barely alive exhausted. I am WHOOPED. No where near enough sleep. Its so tough getting up in the morning and feeling like I haven't rested at all.

I had breakfast with the family, and then went to meet Dirt Dawg at Lake Crabtree County Park. Rolled the single speed again, for even though their trails are open you just dont know how sloppy they may be. I don't have time to do a lot of cleaning. :)

We spent the first 60 minutes mounting his new tubless tires and rims. Pretty easy, but it takes a little time to get it done. No worries.

We then where able to go out for about 2hrs.

Hung on the couch the rest of the day. Just not right. Is it bedtime yet?

I did set my post ride basal rate to a 20% reduction this evening though. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Back on the Single Speed tonight after an abbreviated work day. My littlest man was up over night and too sick to go to school. I headed home a bit after 13:30 to hang with him while K made some international business calls. Hello, Monaco?

Was able to get out by 17:00, from the Wellness Center. With all the craziness at home, I was a little later lowering my temp basal rate. Not a big issue, as the first half of the ride tonight was going to be more instructional paced.

I was meeting some folks who where doing their first mountain bike race this Sunday. Figured we could preride the trail and work on some starts and stuff.

Um, wrong. After the lightning last night came a TON of rain. The trail was pretty not fit to be ridden. Well, with a conscious anyway. :) We road the double track for a bit, and then the crew called it.

I headed back over to the Hill and road the now standard issue wet trail hill repeat loop a couple of time. Yeah. :) Nothing to write home about, but saddle time is saddle time.

Got a couple of good days of weather in a row coming up, so I should be able to get out and get some hours in. Fingers crossed. :)

Headed out on the Superfly SS straight from work. I left from the UNC Wellness Center, and had set my pump's basal rate to its normal 55% reduction about an hour earlier.

Just a PERFECT day for a ride. Was shooting for two hours, and I figured I would roll the wet trail hill repeat loop for a bit. That was ok with me, as the wild (what other type are there) coyotes have had cubs. These guys are living in the trail system by the Horace Williams airport in Chapel Hill. Yeah, Chapel Hill North Carolina. Read that last sentence twice.

June 6th and 7th was the American Diabetes Association's North Carolina Tour de Cure. This was my 4th year serving as Co-Chair for this fundraiser, and I also served as captain for the Cycling Spoken Here / Type1Rider team. The Tour de Cure (TdC) serves as the primary fund raiser for the ADA.

Our team was made of 21 people this year, and we finished in the top 5 in total fund raising efforts. The Tour itself raised over $200K. This money is spent on diabetes cure research as well as fundamental support programs for diabetics.

The route went from Cary to Pinehurst via either a 75 or 100 mile route. There was also a 40 mile one day route, and a 10 mile route for families with little riders to complete. The route and destination were new this year, and they didn't disappoint. The route was spectacular with continous rolling hills and horse farms for the majority of the length. The 100 mile route even drifted through Fort Bragg for a bit as well. Southern Pines (Pinehurst) was a great place to finish, with lots to do and a nice hotel to host dinner and the after party.

The weather cooperated each day as well, giving the riders low to mid 80s and overcast. No rain, and a very light breeze rounded out the perfect conditions.

My BGs where near perfect as well ranging from 160 to 99 throughout the day. I worked fairly hard by myself during the first 30 miles of the ride going back and forth on the route to change tires and ride with primary fund raisers and other diabetic cyclists.

After that I was able to get hooked up with my wife's group, and enjoy a social pace with them to the end. Once finished I headed backwards on the course a few time to bring help bring some of the other riders and groups in.

A great ride, and a great day in the saddle. Dinner was wonderful and I spoke afterward to the assembled crowd about the day, the fight to find a cure, upcoming changes for next year, and general life as a person with diabetes. I also made my appreciation for all those who participated in the Tour to be known. What these 400+ people who ride, and the volunteers and staff at the ADA do to further the cause is truly awe inspiring.

The Tour de Cure is always a very moving event for me personally. While one the route I had the chance to speak one on one with over 50 people who have been affected by the disease in one way or another. When I get a chance to talk about the disease I mention the 600 people who are die every day to diabetes. I am aware of the 4380 people who are diagnosed every with diabetes day. And I stand amazed at the people with diabetes who put their fears aside and chase their dreams each and every day.

Check out some of the pics in my Tour de Cure Gallery
