Another great ride today in great weather on the Rig. Ya know, I am really starting to love this bike more and more. I am going to make it tubeless soon, but it rides really smooth for a rigid.
Was able to get out at 13:30, and stayed on the local usual trail system. After being out for a little while, I took a little "break" to chat with a friend about buying a new bike. THANK GOODNESS she finally bought one later on that day (and a 29er at that)!! :)
Afterwards I ventured out and ran into my friend Matt. We chased each other around the woods for another two hours or so, and then I headed home.
Felt good, and had a good time. VERY far behind on both water and carb fueling. Besides the 30 minute break in the middle kinda got things a little off track. I did make some good mods to the pump settings, and kept things on the skinny.

Left the Wellness Center at 12:44 on the day after Thanksgiving for an ALL afternoon ride on the Superfly.
It was a picture perfect day for a ride. Temps in the low 60s. Got the chance to meet up with a friend at 13:15, and got to ride with her for a couple of hours as well. Just a fabulous day!
I stayed on the usual intake plan of 40g per hour, and I was running my usual temp basal of 45% of normal. Got a bit behind on the hydration, but not too bad given the base pace we kept for the first half of the ride.

The second half of the ride was quicker and, again, mind blowing. You have to test ride a new G2 29er hard tail, and a Superfly if you can. Seriously. Wicked!

For some reason I didn't set my normal post ride basal rate tonight. Not sure why. Forgot I guess. :)

Took half a day off today to get a jump on the holiday weekend (besides, I turned 40 today and needed to get out and enjoy the picture perfect weather)! I planned on meeting George from 8Dot Graphics and some other friends at Beaver Dam for a Pre-Thanksgiving Day ride.
Forgot my heartrate monitor, so I didn't get any HR data, but it was a great ride on the Superfly with these guys.
Just before the ride rolled out, I ran into a man I know via the TdC. Cliff is a great guy, fellow cyclist, and has had a tough, scary year. It was nice to chat with him and see him out riding his mtb.
The Superfly continues to amaze and impress. I have never ridden a bike that performs like this before. It just completely rails. The coolest thing is how comfortable I feel on it, and I have only had 3 rides on it. Just killer!

When I got home from the ride I discovered the Abbott Freestyle Navigator on the kitchen table.

It was a great birthday celebration with the family later on that night. Very nice to be able to share it with the boys, and J is the greatest candle blower EVER!!
No basal rate adjustment at bedtime tonight since I did have some cake! :)

Nothing to talk to much about today, as I am not in the best of moods. Seems our last lap at the race this past Saturday was "missed". Second time in two years that this has happened to me. It's just a local fun race so I didn't complain out loud, but I am kinda bummed. Meant the difference between 1st and 2nd. I am hoping that they get it squared away in the next few days.
In the meantime I took the Rig out for a "recovery ride". Right. It was just a 60 minute, get the frustration out thrashing. :)

First a note: That is not a mistype! 96g of food yesterday. Just wasn't hungry, and the BGs where kinda weird in the AM.
I had a Dr.s appointment today at 13:30, so I headed for a rare week day sun lit ride after I got done there. Weather was PERFECT!
Couldn't think of a better time to go and get my first ride in on the Superfly!!! YOW!!! Which is good thing since there is a 6 hr race I am doing on it in less than 48 hours. :)
There are these extremely rare magic moments in life when the first time you try something, or meet someone, that you sense complete comfort and oneness. Tonight was one of those times.
The Superfly is sheer perfection. Right from the first pedal stroke to the last one 3 hrs later.... like I have been riding it my whole adult life. Seriously. It's that good.
Very, very light and fast. The G2 geometry is the real deal, and the Superfly simply rails through tight stuff. Best climbing bike I have ever ridden. Period.
It is so much fun to ride I honestly can't describe it. 100 times better than my expectations. You have to experience it to really understand how fantastic it is.

I really appreciate how lucky I am to be in a position to ride and race on this bike. A big thank you to Travis (tpg) and Fisher Bikes for affording me the oppurtunity. Thank you!
I set my pump down to a 55% basal reduction at 14:00, and was headed out of the Wellness Center parking lot on the S'Fly at 15:30.
Stayed on the local trail system and headed into some trails and climbs that I knew very well to shake the bike down. Did I mention how crazy awesome this bike is?!?!?!
Was back at the WC at 17:30, and headed in to get a 30 minute run in. After the run I put another hour worth of cycling in to make for a great long workout. Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know.... race this weekend... taper...
I NEEDED the outlet.
Felt FANTASTIC when I was done!!

NOTE: I just realized that I forgot to adjust the time on the Cozmo, so my report is off by an hour. Duh!
After work today, I was just NUTS to go for a ride! The race this past Saturday got postponed due to rain, and it has been quite a few days since I was able to get a good ride in. The race was rescheduled for the 22nd. This is going to present a small issue as we don't have coverage for the kids, so K and I might need to do a duo. We haven't done one like that in 4 years. :)
Right at 17:00 I set my basal rate down to its normal 55% pre-ride reduction. I forgot to lower it earlier, so I only got about 37 minutes on a lower rate before I rolled out of the Wellness Center parking lot.
I am in the process of selling some bikes and getting a new one built and ready, but I was FINALLY able to get out on the newly completed Rig SS for a good lengthy ride.

The bike is a TON lighter than my previous 29er single speed, and rides beautifully. I was amped to see how the Bontrager carbon rigid fork worked. It was sweet!!
I just hit the local trail system, but stayed off the closed single track. Just cruised the hill repeat loop on campus then the double track in the woods.
The temp was ridiculously low, and I fell a little of my fueling and hydration pace. Was in the 25g per hour via a Hammer Gel, and only took in 30oz of hydration during the two hours.

Well I have been mentioning a couple of announcements for the past couple of weeks, and I can finally let the cat out of the bag (plus, I have gotten more than a few emails over the past couple of days, about why my bikes are disappearing). :)
I am not sure if I can mention it yet, so I cannot go into a lot of details but it involves Fisher Bikes and a certain team they have that rocks big wheels!
The sweetest, lightest, and most jaw dropping bike I have ever seen arrived this past Monday. Here are a few sneak photos of it right out of the box:

I was SO STOKED about this bike, I cannot even tell you!! It actually had me up overnight checking the UPS tracking info. Nope, I'm not kidding! :)
I have also acquired and built a phat new Fisher Rig 29er SS. It is is AWESOME, and will get some pics up of that in a few days.
The other big announcement is that tomorrow, I will be featured in an add for Cozmore in the American Diabetes Assoc. magazine insert entitled Take Charge! Your Guide to Living With Diabetes. It be inserted into newspapers throughout the United States tomorrow. The list of papers include the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, The Boston Globe, Chicago Sun-Times, Houston Chronicle, The Miami Herald, New York Daily News, The Orange County Register, The Philadelphia Inquirer / Daily News, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and The Washington Post.
If you live in any of these cities make sure to check it out!!

Just a little ride today to get the muscles moving after yesterday's ride. Less than a week until the 6 hr event, so its all about recovery from now until then. :)
It turns out that one of the folks that went down yesterday actually ended up with a hospital trip last night. Turns out she chipped her elbow and tore a quad muscle. I felt bad, as she didn't seem that injured while we where out. Hopefully she recovers quickly!!
Concentrated on hydration during and after the ride today.
Once off the bike, I headed over to Cycling Spoken Here for a couple of hours to hang with Marcy and crew over there. We just talked bikes, parts, racing, etc. Was cool to just hang and talk about my favorite topic!! :)

Was able to get out for a long ride today on the course marked for the six hour next weekend. Left the Wellness Center at 10:14, and headed to meet K and some CSH folks at the trail head.
Arrived right on time, and pretty quickly rolled right out. We where meeting a second group at noon, so we completed a pretty nice 45 minute loop on trails not used for the race.
During this loop I lost my drivers license as I didn't completely zipper the bag I was carrying my monitor supplies and wallet in. Man... what a bummer. Luckily, the license was almost expired, so it was time to get a new one anyway. I guess.
Continued ride a little after noon with the new folks we picked up, and headed over to ride the race course. The nine of us started on the course.
Ride was pretty good, although some of the riders where pretty new and were a little uncomfortable with some of the more rocky and technical spots. A couple had some hard crashes, but everyone made it out ok. Generally. :)

I did set my basal rate to a slightly lower than normal nitetime bedtime basal rate settings. I used 70% of normal for 6hrs.

Got out a little late today, but still got a great ride in!
Stayed local and did some hill work and the local trail system. Race coming up next weekend, so I was trying to figure out the race layout. I haven't seen a map yet, but I am sure that I will get a bearing soon. :)

I will have another announcement coming up in a couple of days!

It is finally official! What started with a dinner meeting in Washington DC several months ago, has grown into a strong relationship with a great company, with a dedicated staff, and extraordinary technologies!
Smiths Medical is very well know for their Cozmo Insulin Pump and Cozmore Insulin Technology System, including the Cleo 90 infusion set.

We will be adding their logo and links to the Type1Rider internet presence, and our newly designed 2009 race kit. I will help promote and demonstrate the features of the Cozmo 1800 insulin pump that I have been using for the past 8 months, and how these features benefit me in riding and racing.
I truly and completely believe in this system, and that makes it easy to have Cozmore join Type1Rider as a sponsor. I have been amazed with how well the Cozmo works in concert with my training and racing needs. The system as a whole completely blows my old Medtronic out of the water in terms of flexibility and program ability.
I was offered a chance to meet most of the staff of the diabetes division of Smiths Medical at their national sales meeting in Las Vegas in late September. I was truly amazed at how dedicated this group is in making a difference in the quality of life for people suffering from diabetes. It is one of those rare organizations where that specific part of the goal never loses focus, and it shows.
They are very interested in helping me forward the mission of Type1Rider, and helping me to push the limits of my personal and diabetic endurance athletics.
A special thanks to Steve, Mark, Marcela, Fran, and Susumu for working with me to make this relationship come to be. I am VERY excited about working with Smiths Medical and the Cozmore brand in 2009.

Drove over to the Chapel Hill North trail system to meet a bunch of folks from Cycling Spoken Here for the weekly Sunday morning shop ride. Had a group that started out at 9 or 10, and it was awesome!
Always fun to ride with a group, and I don't usually get a chance to ride with such a large bunch.
I did get a little behind on my fueling, and my BG did drop off a little as I approached the 90 minute mark. I took (snuck actually) a small bag of M&Ms to correct and was ok from there.

As fun as this ride was, there was one point that was kinda lame. We ran into a group of riders heading the other way while out on the trail, and I got snubbed by one of them who works at the shop I used to ride out of. Not a huge deal, and didn't ruin a fantastic ride, but still it was a little disappointing for sure. Oh well.
Set the pump back to a normal basal rate when I got back to the car.
Spent the rest of the day chillin at home with the family!
I was thinking about how cool its going to be to get to ride and race with the CSH group. I am really looking forward to it!!

Set the pump down right around 10:30, as I was packing the Fuel on the car to head to Lake Crabtree County Park. Plan was to meet George from 8DotGraphics around 12:30 or so, but I wanted to ride a bit before hand.
Ride was a TON of fun, and it was a perfect comfortable pace. Trail system was a little busy, but not too bad.

We talked a bunch about next year's proposed race schedule, and how to train and prepare for it. George has an IMMENSE knowledge of training and diet, and it is always great to chat with him about that stuff.
I set the pump back to normal at when I got back to the car.
6 hr race at the trail system I ride all the time in 2 weeks.
