First ride post race was this afternoon. Just no time to get on bike beforehand. Recovery this week was ok, and I was feeling pretty normal by Tuesday. Whatever that's worth.
I modified my basal rate to allow me to start me ride at a couple of ticks before 19:00. Rolled out of the Wellness Center on the Kona 29er SS and headed towards a much drier local trail system.
As shown by the data, I just kept it simple and spinning tonight.
Energy Expenditure 1558 kcal
Number of Heart Beats 20904 beats
Minimum Heart Rate 94 bpm
Average Heart Rate 134 bpm
Maximum Heart Rate 182 bpm
Ascent 1020 ft
Felt pretty good, all things considered. :)
Was done and back at the truck a little after 21:30. Set pump back to normal rate.
Still plenty amped about the race this past weekend. Only downside, is that I can't locate any photos. I guess there wasn't a photographer there?
When I went to bed, I set the basal rate on the Cozmo to a reduction for a couple of hours. Ride wasn't that hard, so no big setting needed.

Took the day off from the gig today to get packed and organized for the weekend at the Burn 24 hour. Did a little work in the morning and evening, but pretty much took a leisurely pace at getting everything ready.
Made meals, last minute bike tuning, laying out my clothing, tools, parts, etc.
I have have received a bunch of emails this past week concerning my comments on my personal racing philosophy I mentioned in my May 14th post. Quite a few seemed to suggest, just as the person I was talking to on the 14th, that I didn't sound competitive enough, or able to race with the "big boys" and the elites.
I find those statements laughable and, truthfully, a little annoying. I don't believe that you have the right to question my drive or commitment. You can ask ANYONE who personally knows me or trains with me (Marcy, or POS) and they will tell you that I am a extremely competitive person who cannot stand to lose or fail. I have been accused of being competitive to a fault. I ride, train, and race as hard as I can to be as fast as I can be.
That being said, over the years I have learned to appreciate the finer aspects of racing more than flat out winning. There is certainly SO MUCH more to consider a "victory" that just taking 1st place.
Leaving the diabetes aspect aside, to me the definition of endurance racing is simply overcoming all forms of mental and physical challenges, and continuing on regardless of the obstacle faced. The events I tend to partake in will push a rider to (and past) their own personal limitations, and I thoroughly enjoy that type of test. When passed, it has a sweet reward like NO OTHER I have ever experienced in any other aspect of my life. When failed, it leaves a biting bitterness in my consciousness that haunts me for long time. Sometimes all the way until the next time I am participating in an event that will test me again.
Add the fact that I am indeed a Type 1 diabetic back in to the equation, and I can find many more "victories" as these races. I am forced to basically monitor the energy consumption and muscular fueling process manually. Just being able to say that I did that at an effective enough level that I was able to complete the event is HUGE to me. That is probably my highest level goal at all events. Everything else is just gravy. Finishing 1st or 51st overall is, honestly, of secondary value.
Does this mean I don't strive to win. Hell no! It just makes my greatest and primary competitor (combatant) at any event diabetes itself. In some ways I actually feel that this leads to MORE pressure and drive succeed. Knowing that diabetes can beat me sometimes (like what occurred at Cohutta this year) is just unbearable. I cannot let the disease think, even for just an instant, that it may have the upper hand. Ever.! I need to keep the throttle down, and need to continue t drive my cleated cycling shoe into its throat.
When diabetes sometimes wins and gains a tiny fingernail hold, a little bit of fear and doubt does start to creep in to my head. Diabetes is a tremendously complicated disease. An unbelievably complicated disease that effects so many aspects of your life and body. Can it even be controlled at such a level?
What if the nay sayers and doubters are right with their statements and predictions? "Type 1 diabetics cannot compete in 24 hour solo events"! "You cannot have successful control of your blood glucose levels under race conditions for that long"! "You will have a catastrophic low and fall in a coma! You will have a catastrophic high, and do permanent damage to your liver, your eyes, your heart"!
I have spent literally thousands of hours in the saddle developing techniques that allow me to effectively race as a "non-diabetic". Learning to use and adapt amazing technologies, tools like the Deltec Cozmo Insulin Pump, I am the only Type 1 I have ever heard of racing these distances and endurance events solo.
24 hour solo mountain bike races and the like are perfect little microcosms of living with diabetes: Learn and train as much as you can. Have a plan for maintaining steady forward progress, but, yet, be ready to deviate from that plan if necessary. Be flexible for an ever changing course in ever changing conditions.
Its exactly what life is like as a Type 1 or Type 2.
To those who emailed to say I "don't sound competitive enough" I say your are completely wrong and misguided. I compete to break the limitations and stereotypes of a deadly disease each and every single time I push down on a pedal whether inside on a spin bike, or during a rain storm during hour 21 at an all day mountain bike race. I compete against myself at least 10 times a day with every blood sugar check, and measure my results one A1C number at a time. A very large percentage of the time, I am completely victorious.
I CAN"T WAIT until noon tomorrow, and the start of the 24 Hours of Burn!!
Just one more......

Got out at 19:25 for one last ride before the race this weekend. I lowered my basal rate by 50% about 60 minutes before ride start time, and rolled out from the Wellness Center on the Kona. No singletrack tonight, as the trails are still "moist".
Kept the heart rate low and just spun it out nice and easy. I feel pretty good, so I have some high hopes for a successful weekend.

Participated in the Ride Of Silence in the RTP this evening. This is a great event and is very moving.
If you ever get the chance to join one of these ride movements I would recommend it.

What a great day! Had a FANTASTIC lunch meeting today with some very important people from a AWESOME company. Not going to comment on it more, but hopefully will be able to share details at some later time.
After work I cruised over to the Wellness Center to teach class from 18:00-18:45. Class was full and rockin! Was surprised to see how many people where there as today is another AWESOME weather day. This is the North Carolina I love. :)
After class I rolled out on my 5.5 for a lite nite ride. The folks I was supposed to meet didn't arrive, so it was a quick lite spin then home.
No basal rate changes at night.
A number of folks have emailed me about my new Deltec Cozmo pump. I am becoming more and more enamored with this pump each and every day. It does SO MUCH cool and useful stuff.
A few people wanted to see the size of the Cozmo. I laid it next to one of my favorite "emergency funds" (tribute to my high school assist track coach Mr Morgan) so you can a reference on the dimensions.
Also here is a bigger image of the attached CozMonitor:

Met George and Greg at Lake Crabtree County Park at 10:30 for a ride around the trails there as well as some more demanding "other" trails in the area. :)
Another beautiful day, I lowered my basal rate near 09:40 in prep for being on the bike at 10:30. I brought the Kona, although I wanted to ride a geared bike instead. I just wasn't sure what the trail conditions really where, and didn't want to be forced to spend time cleaning a F/S rig.
Was trying to keep the HR lower today, as I have 6 days until the 24 Hours of Burn. When we got into the more technical stuff, I lost contact with the guys. This would lead to George's hysterical blog entry at Dirt Dawg Biker. Too funny! BTW, this did force me to buy a new cell phone that the ringer actually works on....
Back to the vehicle and headed home just short of 4 hours later. Pump set back to a normal 100% basal rate at this time.

Afterwards I headed over to see Marcy at the shop she works in. I was close to her shop, and had a little time available.
While there I was able to ride a new 2008 Trek Remedy 8. Bike is KILLER!! Still looking for a replacement for my 5.5, and this could be a bike for that. A little laid back for XC use, but with an adjustable front fork and a longer, dropped stem it could work perfectly.
I made a small adjustment to my basal rate at bedtime. 90% for 5 hours.

Rolled out on the Kona a couple minutes before 13:00 today. Weather is just UNBELIEVABLE. Maybe the most perfect day I have ever seen in NC - ever. No kiddin.
Set the pump down to a 55% reduction at noon. Drove to the Wellness Center, and left from there.
Single track was still very wet from the rain we had during the week, so it was a trip around the big HR repeat loop in Chapel Hill.
Road with only one waterbottle, and, even though I stopped to refill, I found myself most defenetly falling behind in my hydration. Besides that, I kept on the 2 PowerBar Gels per hour fueling schedule. Also, as I was feeling a little hungry, I ate 1/2 a PowerBar anout 2 hours in.
Was a decent ride.

I have waited to the last possible minute, but I need to pull the plug on Granny Gear 24 hours of Conyers this weekend. I REALLY want to do this event, but I just can't.
Not only I am not quite ready to put in a great personal performance, it costs a ton of $$$$ not to completely rock it. I will be thinking about the race as I am riding this weekend. Hopefully, I can rock this event next year, and my situation will be different.
Since I needed a bounce from abonding GG Conyers, I went ahead and registerd for The 24 Hours of Burn next weekend and Cowebell June 21st. Been planning on doing this events, but once you lay out the cash you are more committed.
I was talking to someone about racing the other day, and the different philosophies we have on it. I really only consider racing against myself at these endurance events (of course with two hours to go I will try to run down the person in front of me if possible). It is more important to me that I do as well as I can, perform as I know I can, and have good bg control throughout. If these three thing are true, it is a great victory.
The person I was talking to hinted that I wasn't very competive. I am VERY competive, especially with my PRs. However, I try to keep my eye on the ball with these events. For me finishing putting in a strong performance, and over coming all obstacle to just keep riding is a great day.

After work I hustled over and prepared to teach my class from 18:00-18:45.
After class I was a little low, so I ate and waiting a bit before rolling out on the Kona for a ride. Days getting longer, so I was still not starting in the dark.
If you look at the Pump Details Download, you can see how I changed up (lowered) my starting basal rate for the single speed ride. I am going to modify my starting basal rate from a 50% reduction to a 55% reduction. See how that works. Also, want to really focus on a full 60 minutes between basal rate reduction and ride start.

Man, I was starving today! Jeez I at a ton. So much for "Lite as a feather" mantra, hey Marcy? :)
Its been a weird couple of days on the Tour de Cure front. It always amazes me how people, with a direct connection with diabetes, are so unmotivated to do things to fight it. Grab your bike, join a team, and get moving!!

Had a GREAT ride today on the Kona again. Been riding that a lot lately and I dig it. Didn't get out until almost 16:00, but it is warm and sunny so no problem. Amazing what a difference some of the vitamin d intake from the sun can have on your psyche. :)

The Cozmo pump is working FANTASTIC. I continue to try out more and more advanced features with each day. I really want to focus on building my food library via the Cozfoods tool, but I haven't gotten there yet. Also need to upload some pics of the PC interface. Extremely sweet!!
A fair number of people have emailed and asked about the reports I am using for my pump details info found in the link above. It is generated via a piece of pc software from Abbott that works with the Cozmo pump. The software is call CoPilot, and information about it can be found here:

I am still working on getting the data configured exactly as I would like to see it, but it does a LOT.

Set pump to a 50% reduction at 18:44 in preparation for a ride later on this evening. Looks like rain AGAIN tomorrow, so it was cool to be able to get a longer ride in tonight. Jumped on the Trek Top Fuel at the Wellness Center parking lot at 20:01.
Met a couple of folks (Marcy and some friends of her) in the local trail system at 20:30.
Was able to take in an average of 2 PowerBar Gel's per hour. Been riding with water bottle only, so was a little behind on water intake. Maybe 20oz for the entire 3+ hrs? Not a problem, as it is not HOT yet here in 'da south. :)

Got back to the truck at 11:15. Set the Cozmo back to a normal basal rate right away.
When I went to bed about an hour later, I did a 20% reduction of basal for 5.5 hours.

Still working on getting this ironed out, so look for it to change in the upcoming weeks.
After work I headed over to the Wellness Center to teach class. Class was from 18:00-18:45. As you can see in the report, I was debating what to about my temporary basal rate. I set two different reductions, and then before class started changed my mind. The plan was to go for a ride after class was out.
After class I tested at a 96, and lowered my basal rate to a 50% reduction.
Was out on the Kona by 19:30. I was to meet Marcy at 20:15 out in the local trail system. Unfortunately she got held up at work and couldn't make it out.
Just as well, as I was feeling very tired and beat. Put it on cruise control and spun for a little while before heading back to the barn.
Was a great night for a ride, and ANY time riding is a good thing!!
Changed my basal rate back to normal at 21:35 and tested a couple of minutes later at 111.

Everyone slept in a little bit today, so a bit of a late start. Planning on heading out for a local ride at 12:00 noon, so I set my basal rate to a 50% reduction on the Cozmo at 11:06. Was at the Wellness Center and ready to roll before 12 noon.
This is BY FAR the most perfect day we have had in MONTHS. Just a gift!
Since this is my third ride in < 60 hours, I am finding myself more insulin sensitive right now. I am sure of this as, even though I measured the C I ate earlier in the day, I was feeling low 60 minutes into the ride.
I stopped and tested with the Cozmonitor and was at a 58 mg/dl. In order to correct I did two things: First, tested the Cozmo Hypo Manager for the immediate correction, and then set my basal rate to my > 5 hour ride rate of 35% of normal.
Hypo Manager suggested 28g of fast acting carbs to reach my target of 110. I was hoping to go a little above that, so 32grams of carbs via a small bag of M&Ms went in. I got on my way again, and just cruised for a little while to conserve and recover.20 minutes later I was on my as I at a 77 mg/dl. Felt good, and brought my pace back up to my target training range.
Was able to stay on 2 PowerBar Gels per hour, along with 16oz of water for the remainder of the ride.

Headed back through downtown Chapel Hill on the way home.
A couple more weeks like this, and I should be ready to go racing again. Doubting I can make the Granny Gear in Conyers GA event, but probably be set for the Burn 24 in NC.
Got back to the Wellness Center at near 16:15 and tested a little high at 190. Was able to bolus for that at a reduced rate I call Post Ride. This is a 20:1 ratio instead of the normal 15:1.
Went out to dinner with K later on. I ended up running a little low as I over bolused (aka guessed wrong) with how many C where in dinner I ordered. Ate something before bed to correct.
I did lower my basal rate by 20% for 6 hours when I went to bed a little before midnight.

After a VERY busy day in the office, I headed home to pick up J and ride with him for a bit. Made dinner for the family, and then headed out for a night ride. I lowered my basal rate on the Deltec to 50% of normal (this is easy to do on this new pump. Just select pre-defined custom temporary basal pattern on the menu. Mine is called "Ride <5hr") at 17:30.
Drove to the Wellness Center with the 5.5 and was out and rolling by 18:45.
