I have picked up the support of the UNC Wellness Center at Chapel Hill as a sponsor for 2009. Probably the most technologically advanced and most expertly staffed facility within 500 miles, the sponsorship provides me with a fantastic place to train.

The folks at this special place are like family, and I REALLY appreciate their continued support for the upcoming year! Check out this amazing place at www.uncwellness.com.

I have some VERY exciting stuff in the works!! It just happened recently, and is in ADDITION to the other item that I have not yet mentioned!!! This new relationship will help to make diabetic athletes more visible to the general cycling public, and draws on the relationship started with Trek a couple of years ago! Both of these HUGE announcements are going to have to wait, as the i's are being dotted and t's crossed on the agreements. I will let y'all know as soon as I can!!!

With the new relationship, I am going to be selling my current stable of bikes. I will post the info as soon as possible, but if you are interested in one please email me.

I have been very lucky this year, and greatly appreciate the opportunities that are available to Type1Rider. 2009 is going to be a fantastic year, and appreciate everyone's support!

Last ride before the race began at 18:39 from the Wellness Center parking lot. I set my basal rate back 55% about an hour before. Cold out tonight.. it will take a couple of weeks before I get used to this. :) Yeah, yeah I know... some of you have seen snow already.

No residual effects from the event on Monday. Still working very hard, but trying to get to bed earlier on non ride nights, and just kinda take deep breaths and not attempt to accomplish everything. I am eating a little lite, and my appetite is down a bunch right now. Its all tied together I guess.

Again, very low work output on the ride.

The 8hr MTB National Octoberfest is coming up this Saturday. Should be a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to going. I am a trifle bit concerned however, as, I wasn't going to post this, I fainted/passed yesterday while waiting at the bank. I was just standing there, kinda felt tired, and then the next thing I know I am looking up at customers asking if I'm ok. I know what you are thinking, but my BG level was 155 about 20 minutes later when I got back to the car. There are an unbelievable amount of things going on both professionally and with Type1Rider, and I think I am just plain old wore out.

I really need to take a few days off to just chill out and recharge the batteries. There is a specific project or 3 at work that I need to finish up first, and then I will probably be able to take a few days.

With that being said, I really wanted to get out and ride my bike today, so I dialed the pump down to a 55% reduction at 18:30 and headed over to the Wellness Center to get riding about an hour later.

I didn't want to roll out on the single speed, so the Fuel and I headed to the local trail system. Ride was ok. I kept the heart rate very low, with an avg of 133. Slightly less then normal fueling schedule with only one PowerBar Gel per hour, and about 14oz of water.

After tossing it around for a couple of days, I decided to go race the 8 hour Octoberfest event in Charlotte, NC this coming weekend instead of the 12 hours In The Pit on the coast. Mostly cause much more people will be there, and Marcy will be supporting Harlan Price so I will know someone. :)

Still feeling out of it, and right at the edge of complete exhaustion. Haven't ridden in a couple of days trying to get back on track, but not feeling much better.

Haven't been eating all that well either. Just not at all hungry. Best way to fix all this. Go rip it up on the Top Fuel for a while! :)

Headed out after work, and remembered to decrease my basal rate by 55% at 17:29.

Left the Wellness Center parking lot at 18:36. Its getting colder fast when the sun goes down, and I actually needed to grab some arm warmer and such for this evening. I miss summer already. :)

Ride was fun, and I could up with my TP Marcy about an hour or so in.

So with a "Hey, sparky. I can tell you just had a Gel" we did a nice base ride. Very, very fun!

Stayed close to the normal 2 PowerBar Gels per hour (20g a piece). A little lite on the water, but it was too quick paced or warm.

I did employ the normal 20% reduction for 6hours at bedtime.

Today was pretty cool. A friend mentioned late last night that she wanted to go try a cyclecross race today. Cycling Spoken Here was hosting a CX race in Cary, so we headed over for the 11:15am start time.

She raced her Mtn Bike and had never done a CX race before, and hasn't done much racing at all this year. I think she had a good time, and I can tell you CX looks CRAZY HARD!

They also had a kids race. J didn't want to race, but at the last minute he saw his friend Gus line up. J raced over to join him at the starting line.

It was a great time for everyone there to watch the kids race. Gus and J where out front from the get go. J had a great time, and actually finished first. :) He was a good winner and gave hugs to other racers. :) J talked about it the rest of the day, and wanted to know when my next race was.

Rough BUSY BUSY BUSY day at work. We needed to be in the office for an extended period of time as our management staff presented to the NCI in Washington, DC. Happens every 6 years, and provides the funding for our operations here at Duke. Very stressful day. Luckily, it all seemed to go good.

DID get out for a later ride after I got done.

I am feeling kinda down and worn out as there are SOOOO many things in the air. Trying to get everything buttoned up for next year with T1R, as well as training, etc it taking a toll.

Was invited to ride with the Cycling Spoken Here crew and members of TORC on a ride in North Raleigh early today. Weather was AWESOME, and Marcy met me early to get a little extra time in before the group ride.

I set my basal rate to a normal 55% reduction at 7:00 in prep for a 8:00 ride start with Marcy. Meeting rest of group at 9:00.

We got started a little late, and then the group got started late so you can see in the pump log how I juggled the basal settings to keep me on track.

Ride was fun, and trail was a lot nicer than I remember it. TORC has been doing a great job on the local trails. I was surprised to see how little climbing we did over the 3+ hours. I would have guessed we would have done more. I guess they where shorter, steeper, and more technical than they felt. :)

Set the pump down to 45% of normal at 08:16. Didn't get out of the Wellness Center parking lot on the Top Fuel until 09:53, but it all worked out.

Off from work today to take care of a bunch of errands and stuff in the morning.

After I got those done I set my basal rate down to a normal 55% reduction ride level at 12:10. At 13:13 I was out and riding on my Madone. Thought it would be a good chance to get some nice base road miles in.

Wasn't a bad ride, but the temp kept dropping as the afternoon wore on.

As is usual, a normal carb intake and hydration schedule was followed. 40G of carbs via a PowerBar Gel and 16oz of water per hour.

Was back at the Wellness Center at 15:30. Pump back to normal basal rate level.

Another nutty day in the life! After a late getting home from work today, I got prepared to head out for a ride on the Kona single speed for a little bit. Figured it would be a pretty short ride just around campus, but my training partner Marcy totally hooked me up with some lights to use!

I set my basal rate down to a 55% reduction at 18:32, and headed over to the Wellness Center 20 minutes later. On the way, I got a phone call and passed Marcy who was driving home. She met me at the WC to hand me her lights so I could hit the trails tonight. I was AMPED!! THANKS MARCY!!

I also got the change to drool over the IF computer Harlan left her. Man, this thing is wicked cool. :)

Rolled out on the bike at 19:39. Had a fun ride, and the rain actually held off. Sweet!

Didn't take in too much water or carbs on the ride as I was just tearing it up and having a great time!

One the way out of the trail I remembered to stop and take a pic (although blurry) of this mobile Kidney Care truck I see EVERYDAY while riding the local trail system.

Look at the first disease on the list on the right. A billboard reminder. Kinda like the Geico insurance caveman adds.

I know I keep hinting at some great news, but everything should be squared away by Monday. So I will post on the forums then.

Out!

I had the opportunity to travel to Fort Bragg in Fayettville, NC to give two presentations at Womack Army Medical Center.

Seems the US Army allows soldiers who are diagnosed while in service to STAY in service (even in combat roles) if they can prove a certain level of control. Basically they are placed on temporary duty for a few months while they demonstrate an A1C of less than 7.

I felt really bad about that, as I was treated to a trip to the flight line for an Air Cav unit right afterwards. This experience was almost worth being Type 1 for 5 years. Seriously.

The second session (although smaller) went much, much better. I adjusted my presentation to more target the group that was there, and I think it was better received.

I want to thank everyone who hosted us down at Bragg, especially Julie Nance who set the whole day (including the flight line visit). She is awesome and has a great program down there. I hope to be able to go back and do some other events with them.

And, of course, I want to thank the men and women in uniform who and train so hard, and lay it all on the line for all of us.

Still feeling a little beat down tired, but went for a ride today after a LONG day in the office anyway. I lowered my basal rate to the typical 55% reduction at 17:18 in preparation for the ride start an hour later.

Ride was just ok. I am just tired. It took some effort to stay focused and up to speed, and, of course, my ipod went dead about half way in.

Still managed a quality 2+ hour ride on the Kona 29er SS. Intake of 2 PowerBar Gels per hour, but a little behind on the water with only 20oz taken in total.

Set the basal rate back to normal at 20:37 as I was cruising back to the car.

Earlier this week I mentioned how crazy busy the next couple of weeks were going to be. Here's the run down:

This Friday night, K and I are going to go to a friends house (who needs to stay nameless right now) to have a cookout with a handful of local riders and Independent Fabrication factory rider Harlan Price. He is in town for the TORC Mountain Bike Festival and Race for a few days.

On Saturday there is the TORC festival, and I am racing from 3pm-9pm at the endurance race being held there.

Sunday morning there is a recovery mountain bike ride with some of the people in town for the Festival.

On Monday I am traveling to Ft Bragg in Fayetteville to speak at two sessions to diabetic soldiers and their families. I am both psyched and nervous about this presentation. The members of the armed forces who are serving in combat roles while having Type 1 diabetes are in a situations I can't even imagine. I hope to share some of my experiences with them, and I hope that some of them apply to what the need.

Then... next weekend I am supposed to head off to Atlanta to race a 12 hour at Conyers, GA. More on that later.

Also, look for one of the announcements I have been hinting at to made early next week. It is big one, and opens the door for a great two way relationship. I am very psyched, and can't wait to let you know.

Gotta roll for now!
