Out on the single speed Superfly at 18:30, after lowering my basal rate to a 55% reduction an hour earlier.

Ride was pretty good, and passes this sign with ANOTHER set of keys on it. Too funny!

Everything is moving pretty fast right now, as I try to get some things nailed down for next year. Trek World is coming up in a few weeks, so it will be drool time again!!

Out for a rip on the Superfly today. I have been struggling a ton lately as I have been just exhausted. When the alarm goes off in the morning, I just want to sleep the day away. I need to try and get this in order, because lack of sleep will derail me quicker than almost anything else.

During the ride, I managed to put a nice large dent in the side of my rear rim. The Bonty XdX 1.75 is still holding for no problem. Just got to remember when I am riding on my race hoops to be a little more attentive. :)

My oldest started riding last night on his pedal equipped bike with no training wheels. He just hops on the saddle, balances as he puts his feet on the pedals, and then rides away. It is SO CRAZY. 4 yr and 1 month old. And FAST. Pretty cool. Yes I am world's proudest dad. I am going to take him to a trail this weekend and see how he likes it.

Gotta find a place for the final 12 hour race in the Dirty Spokes series. Race is to be held in Unicoi, GA - not a ton of affordable options. :)

New points series leaders totals just released:

Tony Cervati 12 Hr Solo--Expert 13 34 37 84
Jeremy Edge 12 Hr Solo--Expert - 40 38 78
Erik Nielson 12 Hr Solo--Expert 18 39 - 57

This last race is a double points event, so I need to finish at max 2 positions away from Jeremy in order to top the podium. Unicoi is a climbers course, so it will be a HUGE challenge, but I will just rock the Superfly as hard as I can. Race isn't for another 60 days or so... time for some trips to the mountains to get some extra training in....

Headed out at 12:32 on the Seven for a ride. My plan was to rock some hills for a while, and then head home. But the old saying "The mind was willing, but the body was not" was very much in effect. :)

So I just settled in and road for 90 minutes, before heading back. The heat and humidity of the day caught me off guard. I ran out of hydration pretty quickly.

Spent the rest of the day resting and hanging with the family.

We had a birthday party for my mom tonight at our place. J-man and I had a heck of a great time trying to decorate the cake. You know its getting crazy and out of control when the little dude looks over and says "Daddy, should I call the fire dept.?".

I think my mom had fun.

After it was all over, I was completely wiped. Just wanted to head to bed to face tomorrow.

No temp basal rate at bed tonight.

Sometimes life opens a big can of whoop on you. Everyday this week has felt that way. Just one thing after another. It's giving me a lot to think about.

After a busy, busy day in the office I was able to head directly over to the UNC Wellness Center so I go for a ride. I lowered my basal rate to a 60% reduction at 16:40 and headed out on the Superfly Single Speed at 17:20.

At 17:30 I needed to dial in to a conference call for the ADA Tour de Cure planning commitee. I continued to ride while on the phone. Wasn't too bad for the most part. This call lasted 50 minutes and really didn't accomplish all that much. We did approve the pretty much already deceided idea of moving the Tour de Cure to Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully this will work, as the Tour is taking a big step by moving to a two day event in Pinehirst. We'll see.

After that I was able to and put the rest of my mountain bike ride in. Back to the Wellness Center by 19:30, and I parked the bike and rolled out on my fixed gear for 60 minutes.

I set my pump back to a normal basal rate at 20:00.

I think the best when on the bike, and I think I sorted through some stuff. It's funny how possesed I am by bikes. I feel more in balance while in the saddle then anywhere else.

Time for bed. Out!!

Had an appointment today at lunch, and this was the view out the window of the offices there. The Durham Bull Athletic Park. They also have a huge glass vase of collected home run balls that have landed on their deck. This is pretty cool:

And, by coincedence, I found this thread on MTBR. That's just about exactly what happened to my X-0 shifter at the race on Saturday. Funny this gets posted now. :)

I tried as hard as I could (to the point of yaking while still tearing through the singletrack) but I just couldn't get on the podium. Finished 4th Expert/Pro and am now in the points lead going into final race. Tough day, but I cannot be disappointed in my effort. More to follow on the blog soon.

2009 Tribble Park 12 Hour:EPS Race #3 - Result: 4th

July 11th was the 3rd race in the Dirty Spokes Endurance race series. I headed into the weekend 2nd in the 12 hour Expert division, and was looking forward to the event at Tribble Park in Lawrenceville, GA.

After surviving the mud/swamp/rain/river fest alone at the last race, I conned, er, convinced, my good friend and sponsor George Scott to head down with me. He brought his Supercaliber 29er, and raced in the 6 hour, before putting on his support hat for my solo effort.

We arrived at the race site on Friday around 16:00 and picked a choice pit location.

Fisher tent up and tables delivered, we headed out to lazily pre-ride the 8 mile course. Course looked smooth and quick, with a few rocks and stream crossings. We arrived back at the start in 34 minutes. 34 minutes? Hmmm… something is not quite right here. Turns out we missed a tiny 2.5 - 3 mile section of single track somewhere. The first indication of the Keystone Cops style of weekend.

George and I headed back to Athens (the closest real town to Tribble - no offense) and headed out for dinner. Ended up at the Mellow Mushroom on Clayton St. Why is this important? Well, I will give you a hint: if you are at the MM on Clayton St, sit at the corner of the bar below Uncle Sam. Look out window towards top floor across the street. Be amazed and laugh about it for 3 days. (Times are WAY different than when I was in college). Anyway….

Up early on Saturday, and to the race site by 08:15. We brought the other items to the pits, and got all setup for the 10:00 start. I lowered my basal rate to its normal 55% reduction right at 09:00. Also inserted my backup infusion set, and set the target BG in the pump wizard to 150 from its normal 100. Blood glucose was a near race perfect 134 at 09:25.

I got assigned a race number that actually gave me goosebumps.  121.  It was and omen, and made me think it was going to be an amazing day.

I headed out to get warmed up. Now is where it began to get interesting. As I gently rolled the Superfly out onto the entrance road, I went to make a single gear change out back. Pushed the lever. It clicked and then it popped and then it crunched. That’s not good. The trigger moved the gear back no problem, but the level would push with almost no resistance for 180 degrees before making the gear change. You’re kidding me right? 25 minutes to race time, and the rear shifter is screwed. Perfect. Go to backup bike? Nope.

Ok, I figured out I could use it to change between two gears in the back. Front was working fine. Looks like 6 speed Superfly for the next 12 hours.

The 10:00 start was the most nervous part of the day. 150+ on the mass start sprint into the woods via the parking lot we just parked in. Yes, as crazy as it sounds. Went out hard to get out front and out of the “Thunderdome” of riders behind me. Entered the woods around 20th.

First 3 laps where fine… given the (lack of) gear selections I had. The shifter got progressively worse, and was completely dysfunctional by the end of 3. Lost some time switching pedals, lubing chain, and getting front wheel to the HiFi 29er and headed out on that. Nice to have full gears again.

At one pit stop, I saw a trail of evidence running through the tent making me think George was having some mechanical issues as well. A SRAM wrapper, the top of a chain box, the bottom of a chain box, some links, and then a destroyed chain. I laughed out loud. It fit with the day.

I fell a bit behind on my hydration during the first 5 hours. During hours 6-8 it began to show itself. A bit nauseous all the time - first stage of hydration. I took more time between laps to try to take in as much as possible. Getting off track is a vicious circle type of problem. Nauseous means less carb intake. Take less insulin. Take longer breaks to fix. Blood glucose climbs during breaks. Switch to 100%+ basal rate to combat. Higher blood glucose levels lead to dehydration. Repeat.

So it was a struggle there in the middle hours of the race for sure. Many, many pump basal rate adjustments based on the amount of intake, the lap effort, and the time off the bike making adjustments. Stayed right on the edge of bg/hydration meltdown all day.

About 8 hours or so in, the Hi Fi suffered a component failure. I got back to the pits and just kinda sat there. Smiling. These days happen. What can you do.  I switched the pedals back to the Superfly, and moved the wheel back over. Then I cut the rear shifter cable on the HiFi and removed the rear shifter. George was kind enough to bring the Supefly and the shifter over to neutral support. 30 minutes or so later the Superfly was back in business. Sweet!!

Under 4 hours to go, and needing 4 laps to be on the podium. Time to ratchet it up and try to go.
Next lap was fastest of the day, but I was running out of time. I needed to put in a huge effort and try to save lots of minutes right here, right now. BG of 63 before heading out. Took in some simple carbs, and rolled out on the next lap. About 15 minutes into this route, those simple carbs decided not to finish the lap. I didn’t stop, I just yacked off the side of bike. Not pretty, I know, but I needed to keep going. Not much later, the bg was, of course, dropping like a rock. Well, that’s that. Race over. Oh well, that’s endurance racing.

Ended up 1 lap behind 3rd place. The saving grace… this race puts me in 1st place in the series by 7 points heading into double point finale. Must remember to load up on chains, shifters, tires, lube, 4 leaf clovers, a horseshoe, my lucky yellow boxers, the penny I found when I was 8, …., ….., ……

Tony worst race of my life? No. But close. :). HiFi has broken a major component. Took shifter off HiFi to have it installed on Superfly. Mechanicals, followed by mechanicals, followed by mechanicals. Usually this doesn't happen. Good news? I'm in fourth. If I finish fourth I will be leading the series coming out of here. It's called endurance. LOL

-- Post From My iPhone
Part of course we missed added a good 14 minutes to the lap time. BGs generally ok, but I screwed up my hydration. Suffering a little so taking 20 or so minutes to fix.

Rear shifter on Superfly went bye bye on lap 1. Switched to HiFi on lap 3. I have 4 in so far, and am 2 laps behind leader. 32 miles, targeting 88-92 total. Winner will do 14-15 laps.

Will head back out when nausea from dehydration goes away. Just keep turning the pedals.

George is doing great. He destroyed his chain, and is slightly dehydrated as well. Lots of crashes today.

None by us. :)

OUT!!

Great turnout this morning. Maybe 300-325. Start will be insane for sure.

I see a boat load of singlespeeds. I mean a boat load.

I literally got goosebumps and a little wet in the eye when they gave me my race packet at registration:

1 every 21.

It's going to be a great day!!!

Tony that was one rough night of mixed sleep for sure. I'll just have to petent that I'm 17 and it doesn't matter. HA. Yeah right.

BG is a little high, but better than being low. Inserting spare infusion set, and getting packed up to head back to the race site. Set target BG in pump wizard to 150 from standard operating 100.

Settling in after a busy day of travel, pit setup, and looking for the Versus network.

George and I Left around at 8:45 and arrived here at 15:00. Along the way we saw a few things that made us stop and stare. One was this old sign store down in... actually I don't know where.

Literally pulled over to take the pic.

Stopped in the hotel to check in and unload the Superfly and then we headed to the race site.

Along the way we made a stop in at the Bicycle Hub to pick up a much needed item for George... socks.

Made it to Tribble Hill Park by 16:30. We placed the tent and the chairs right on the course following the timing tent. This place is tight. Not sure how many riders had registered, but we heard 250 or so. They are going to do a mass start with a once around the parking lot parade lap. Then into the trail.

We preroad the course today, and it is 8 miles long and pretty smooth. Fast course, with a little bit of sand, sharp corners, and some token rocks and stream crossings. Should be fun to ride once the "traffic" thins out. Definitely a single speed course. Only took 34 minutes to complete the lap, and we where just cruisin. I think we missed a 1.75-2 mile loop section, but our lap time where about 6 or 8 minutes faster than most people think a fast lap will be. 12 hour winner WILL do 20 laps.

J-man I hope you like some of these pictures.....

A few more of the pictures I shot today are here in the Dirty Spokes 12 Hour EPS Race 3 album.

We walked up to downtown and ate at the Mellow Mushroom. Met some U of G college guys as we ate at the bar to save time. I won't go into details.... but man times have changed from when I was in college. A LOT.

Going to head out to the course at 7:15am tomorrow. Should get us there by 8:00. Plenty of time to get the insulin and BG dialed in, and get some quality warmup time.

I REALLY want to thank everyone who called or txt'd me today. I appreciate each and everyone of you providing all the support you do. THANK YOU!

Looking forward to tomorrow, so I'm OUT!

Here's a few photos of the 2010 Gary Fisher Superfly 100 I mentioned earlier. It's OCLV carbon, ABP equipped, and is rocking an E2 tapered headtube. Oh yeah, reported 23.5lbs in a size large. So SWEET!!

I know what I'll be dreaming of tonight!

Now, I'm out!!

-- Post From My iPhone
Tonight was just trying to get through a bunch of maintenance items, and do as much packing for the 12hr this weekend as I could.

I have been working on my interweb presence for the past couple of weeks (as time allows). The main Type1Rider site needs a new home. I am thinking about using the new Blogger inteface for web 2.0 to be the destination of Type1Rider.org, and then switch the main site content and the forums over to GoDaddy. Trying to save money and make sure I am hosted with a more financially stable company. Hopefully I will be able to get that all done by next week. We'll see.

Picked up the groceries I will need, and packed the car with what I could tonight as well. That Yakima RocketBox on top of the Civic is unbelievable!! Put the Fisher quickup tent, the park bike stand, some spare parts, and two folding chairs up there. Crazy!

Going to get a light spin in tomorrow before packing the rest of the stuff. Nothing too big, but just enough to make traveling easier.

I was hoping to see my good and newly married friend CC while near Atlanta, but I don't think our scheduling will allow it. We'll try again in October. :)

Y'all seen the 2010 Superfly 100 yet? Check out BikeRadar or do a Google search. Seriously sick.

Alright off to bed... Quality quantities of sleep is the best thing I can do right now.

Out (like a light).... :)

Had one of those days that you are able to cover a bunch of ground. Work was overly successful, and I had a positive meeting with a new insulin pump company. The weather is perfect, and everything is generally all ok. Sweet.

I wanted to go for a fairly low key light flat spin to day to shake down the Superfly for this weekends 12 hour event. A friend of ours txt'd and said she would be rolling at Lake Crabtree County Park. Figured that would work perfect.

Set a temp basal rate of 45% at 17:50 and headed to the park. Was on the bike and riding by 18:40 with a starting blood glucose of 87. Since I was on the lower end of the scale, I set my basal rate to a great reduction of 65%. About 40 minutes into the ride, I then set my basal rate back to its normal 100% rate.

Had a good time rolling with another rider on a HiFi 29er. The Superfly feels perfect, and I only needed to make some minor seat adjustments. Other than that, she is good to go.

Of course I needed to watch Le Tour at night after I got home. Today's stage was one of the most intriguing and tactical stages I have seen in a LONG time. So sweet.. tomorrow's TTT is going to be a barn burner for sure!

No temp overnight post ride basal tonight as the output on the ride was just to little. Out...

Up early to check the weather for the morning MTB ride. Wanted to get a solid 6 hours today, but got started a little late as the weather was making up its mind.

Set my pump down to a 55% reduction at 8:10, an headed over to the UNC Wellness Center with the HiFi on the car. I was about 1 block away from my house, and it started to pour. Not rain. Pour.

Gave it a couple of minutes, and it didn't seem like it was going to let up. Got out of the car in the mini-monsoon and got saddled up. Rolled out of the parking lot right at 09:00. Figured I could hit the wet weather dirt road/hill repeat/greenway loop for a while.

It was surprisingly cold while getting up to operating temperature. About 10 minutes into the ride I got a pleasant surprise of seeing my close friend Tracy running with her running group. Not only was it awesome to see her, but it really gave me an uplift since I wasn't the only one training in this weather. :)

About an hour in I felt like I was going a little low. I didn't have my monitor with me (raining WAY too hard), I just went ahead and lowered my basal rate to a 80% reduction to help me recover.

From that point on the ride was great and I felt pretty good, giving the hot road cycling work yesterday. Great way to end the weekend and get ready for a recovery week for next weekends 12 hour.

Vertical Distance: 1090.00 yd
Max HR: 178 BPM
Avg HR: 145 BPM

I did set a night time post ride temp basal of 75% for 6 hours. Didn't feel to hungry, so I am a little concerned with possibly going low over night. Hopefully the temp rate will help to avoid that.
