After work today I was able to celebrate the first group mountain bike ride of the year. Jumped on the Superfly at the Wellness Center at 18:30, and met the group at Wilson Park about 20 minutes later.

Big group... about 9 of us. Weather was amazing... I actually had to strip down while on the ride. Been MONTHS since I've had to say that.

There was a GF Paragon 29er on the ride, and I got to throw a leg over it for a quick minute. Great riding bike with a killer black and white paint scheme.

Set the pump back to normal basal rate as I cruised back to the car.

Basal rate set to custom 20% reduction for 6 hours at bedtime.

I am going to be ordering a Yakima Rocket box 16 for the roof of the Civic tomorrow. I am traveling to a lot of events this year (starting in 2 weeks) and NEED the space. Might look a little strange... maybe should have ordered the smaller one? :)

Out on the HiFi after work today. Weather was decent, and I was happy to get out.

Found this waiting on the trail system I have been riding for the past 15 years.

Yup. A road. Not a good sign.

All in all a good ride.

Weather this week has been horrible! I did get out for about 1.5hrs a couple times during the week, but it was too cold for my HRM to work. Sad, but true.

Today I was able to head out for a nice road ride. Windy (20mph), but sunny and warmer. We road up to and them completed the old PowerMan (now Carrboro Classic) road course. I rolled out of the Wellness Center at 11:55, after setting my basal rate to its normal reduction beforehand.

Totally mileage for the day was about half a century. Did I mention I was riding my fixed gear? :) No road bike in the stable yet, so it came down to the Superfly or the Steamroller. Thought the Steam'oller would better to combat the wind.

Stayed on a pretty regular 20g per hour via Hammer Gel. Little lite on the hydration, but felt fine.

Hopefully the trails dried out some today, and I will be able to get out on a mtn bike tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

After work tonight I headed right over to the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science for the NC American Diabetes Assoc. Family Fun Night. This event is held for families and children who are dealing with diabetes. It is the kickoff event for the weekend, which includes the ADA Gala.

The turnout for this event was fantastic, and I wore one of the new jerseys for my presentation. Of course I brought the world's most amazing ice breaker - the Superfly - with me. About 150 or so there, and lots of younger people came up to me to ask about the Navigator, 29ers, the Superfly, and endurance racing. Very cool.

I only had 25 minutes, but I think I did a decent job. Also speaking was Dr. John Buse from the UNC Diabetes Care Center, and a lawyer from the ADA who is based in DC. Dr. Buse was great as usual.

Interesting fact from Dr. Buse's presentation - 2% of the US GNP is diabetes related. THAT is a crazy fact.

Was thrilled to be here, had a great time, and hopefully was able to answer some questions. Besides where else can you find a rocket in Durham?

Added a new awesome event to the official calendar today. I am going to be helping out at a mountain bike clinic in Charlotte, NC on May 16th. What makes this clinic great is that it is being offered to kids and families who are affected by diabetes. This is happening via the JDRF, the Carolina Bicycle Company race team, and a very special person named Cricket Butler. Cricket has a son who is Type 1, and she is doing the Tour Divide race this year to raise money and awareness for diabetes research. Check it out: www.teamup4type1.com.

More on this clinic as details become available, but it will probably be a highlight of my year!

Out!

The weather finally broke, and the trails are dry! Amazing. I set my basal rate down to the normal ride reduction of 55% at 11:36 and rolled out of the Wellness Center parking lot at 12:31.

Road the HiFi at the Chapel Hill North trail system. Knee feels perfectly fine, and the ride was a heck of a lot of fun. It was a little weird not seeing anyone out there, at all... what the heck where they doing?

Just trying to stay in a lower base range for the next couple of weeks.

Was able to stay pretty true to 40g per hour and approx 12oz of hydration. Something I am really going to concentrate on in the upcoming year - racing and riding nutrition. I need to learn more and get this dialed in.

Anyway, set the pump back to normal as I headed back to the WC. Was back on deck at 16:00.

After work rolled out on the RIG for about 90 minutes. Just wanted to feel out what the knee can and can't do, and how well the super stitch job will hold up.

Knee felt perfectly fine, and no stitches got ripped out, so I am good to go. Sweet.

Now, the bigger issue. I am going to be making some MAJOR mods to my basal rate in a day or two. I am still running on the low side most of the time, and I am still not eating as I had been for the past 4 or 5 months.

Needing to drop another 5lbs or so, and my stomach is still not exactly right. Will post the details on the pump changes when I get it done, but figure a 10% or so total basal reduction across the board.

Also, managed to show my face to the CSH crew and talked to Marcee for the first time today since the incident.

I have to tell you, Steve and Marcee at CSH get it. I mean they really do. Marcee, you are the best training partner and teammate I could ever imagine. Thank you. (And please don't ever through the Superfly down again). ;)

They understand how much I feel that I assume the identity of each of the 23 million diabetics in the US whenever I put the Type1Rider kit on. It labels me as one of them, and I represent them ALL while wearing that tag.

Failure (like incidents the other night) are completely unacceptable by me. I know it sounds ridiculous, but riding with the self imposed weight of the 23,000,000 other T1s and T2s is hard to shake when things go bad. Feels like I let everyone down. Like I am showing that something isn't possible for us to do. Of course I don't believe that... but the doubt begins creeps in.

It takes me about 24-48 hours to remember that diabetes is a relentless disease that never stops, and will find a way to raise its head once in a while. Tuesday was a perfect storm. Horribly sick last week. Trying to drastically cut my caloric intake. Weather changing so longer more intense rides starting. All my experience and wonderfully effective tools couldn't prevent it.

Steve was awesome and really made me more relaxed about the whole situation, and helped me to refocus on the important big picture. Thanks so much for the call and text msg on Wednesday, and the time to chat.

I always say this blog is an open book to my life living and training with type 1 diabetes. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Tuesday was ugly. I can only make adjustments, and extract all I can from the experience to learn from it.

Just gotta keep turning the pedals and repeatably punch diabetes in the throat.... one stroke at a time.

Been really struggling with BG levels off the bike since I was sick last week. Started my dieting for the start of the "season" about the same time, and have been chasing lows and lower than normal for the past 5 or 6 days.

Well, it all came crashing down "literally" tonight on a ride with my 29er Crew team mate Marcee.

BG was running fairly normal (I mean as "normal" as it has been for the past week) and I headed out for a ride on the Rig after work. About an hour in, I knew that I was low and tried to catch it by eating as we went alone. Didn't want to over chase, so I ended up running short.

We where about 90 minutes in, and I could begin to feel my feet and legs began that weird low blood sugar cramp, uncontrollable movement thing. I was all over the place on the bike. Feel over a few times on single track over nothing more than sticks.

I told Marcee that I was in trouble, and we tried to get out on the double track. I was really in trouble now, and was doubting I could make it out. My plan was to get to the old bus station (at the trail head) and stop there to fuel and adjust the basal rate to a very low recovery level.

As we headed down the gravel double track I augured the Rig into the ground. I was layed out and couldn't get up. Started to have a little seizure, with very erratic and uncontrollable movements. Was alert and speaking (and I use that term loosely).

First I felt stupid for freakin Marcee out, and for letting this happen. Marcee was awesome, and it was the first time I had gone low like this while she was around. Second I was trying to figure out the best thing to do.

I was able to consume some more of the carbs I had with me, and we called for a ride out.

By the time I got back to the Wellness Center and my car I was feeling much better. Ego wrecked, but was back up into the 80s.

So I head home and grab a shower. While doing that I noticed that my left knee was REALLY tore up. One great big freakin' hole in the left side with some rocks and gravel stuck in it.

Got changed and headed to UNC Hospital to get it cleaned out and stitched up. They actually pulled a rock out from deep in the hole with a pair of tweezers. Cool.

Dr. O'Brian was pretty cool, and he was able to stitch it so I could ride in a day or two. I think it was 7 stitches or so to get it done.

Was able to walk with little or no problem back to the car in the parking deck at the hospital. Will probably take tomorrow off (maybe a little ride around the neighborhood to make sure it doesn't get stiff), but jump back on the bike for a good mountain ride the day after.

Got home around 3:00am. Knee was stiff, but all in all pretty good.

Got out after work today for a cruise on the HiFi 29er. Just a little ride to flush the legs out after yesterdays race.

When I left home it was clear and quiet. About 90 minutes in, major cold rainstorm blew threw. Ended up putting the last hour or so in in a cold driving sleet/rain. Luckily I had a zip lock bag for the Navigator. Its great having this thing along for rides.

Still felt pretty good! ;)

The 2009 race schedule got started today with the last race in the 2008 TORC Endurance series.  Did this one as a Duo.  Weather was great, and course was in pretty good shape considering how much rain we had been having the past couple of weeks.

Still not completely recovered from the virus that hit me last week.  As a result blood glucose has been a little off and riding has been minimal.  But this was a fun local event, so I wasn’t too stressed about it.

Set my pump down to normal 55% reduction an estimated 60 minutes before I was to start.

We where just a little behind the first place team when I started, and I thought I would make a stab at a quicker then normal lap or two to see if I could close that gap.  Knew I couldn't keep up an optimum nutrition schedule at the faster pace, and considered lowering the basal rate a little more.  Calculated that the fast first 60-90 minutes would raise my BG, and then a slightly slower final 120 minutes or so would allow me to eat a bit and let my BG cruise down.  Balance and a little tight rope, but no biggie.

Well it wasn't my best day on the bike, and I was unable to make up much a difference on the leaders.  Fell behind on eating during lap 2, and my blood glucose didn't stay as high as I planned.  It went lower then we felt optimum, and my team mate picked up the last lap and enjoyed the near 60 degree temps.  Fastest lap of the day for her!

We did do ok though, and pulled out a 3rd place finish at this event.  This also gives us a tie for 2nd overall in the Co-ed Duo category for the series.  Not bad for missing a race.  Big shout to fellow 29er Crew member (and world’s best training partner!) Marcee for winning the solo women’s race and being overall series champion for that class.  Woo Hoo!

Of course the Superfly worked great again!  Two races on it so far, and a 1st and 3rd place finish.  Yup, I love this bike!!
