After work today I was able to get out in the Paragon for a bit over 2 hours. It was cold - really cold - and I was limited to double track and the wet rain repeat loop given all the precep we have been getting.
I lowered my pump to a 55% reduction at 15:45, which was about 60 minutes before ride time.
I got the UNC Wellness Center and got changed and ready to go. As I was getting on the bike, I checked the BG and was at a 54. I must have bolused too much for the bar I ate about 90 minutes earlier. Bummer.
Well, its a training ride, so I did a little experiment. I suspended my insulin delivery for 45 minutes, and did a Hammer gel. If I ride at a zone 2, I should see this rise over the next 45 minutes. Finger crossed.
Knew I couldn't go without the test kit, but was thinking about the cold air temps. I attached a foot warmer (the kind you use for skiing) to the kit carry case, and stuffed it in a jersey pocket under my jacket. I also layed the pump in the same pocket right next to it. This worked GREAT.
Took in another Hammer gel at the 30 minute mark.
Headed out and road for about 55 minutes before stopping to test. I was kinda surprised to see that I was still hovering in the low 50s. I turned off the insulin delivery again, and took in some peanut M&Ms (half a small bag).
Road for another 75 minutes or so, and could tell that the BG was rising as I road. When I was back at the car and finished up, my BG was at an 85. Not great for riding, but not a total fail either considering.
I turned the insulin delivery back on, and then amped my temp basal to a 175% rate for 90 minutes. I knew there would be a whip from the insulin delivery suspension along with the end of the ride.
2 hours later, I was humming along at 123. right on.
Decent base level ride:

Will have the next couple of days off, so I should be able to get some ride time in. OUT!!!!
When I went to bed, I set a 80% temp basal for 6 hours which is pretty standard for an overnight post ride.

Battled some higher running BGs today. Not sure why...
I've been up some 04:00 as a car horn outside blew for 33 minutes. 33 MINUTES. Not an alarm, just a horn. I couldn't figure out whose house it was coming from. I will just wait to see who is jump starting a car tomorrow. :)
Got out on the Paragon for about 2 hours this afternoon. Feels great to get a little ride in before heading into the next couple of days. Looking forward to the holiday celebration tomorrow, and making memories with the family.
Everything is wrapped and prep'd, so it is just time to relax and have fun!
Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday!!

This is a prototype Fisher CX bike. This would be my DREAM cyclocross rig. Lugged steel frame and fork, slider dropouts, belt driven, single speed.
Fisher brand manager Travis Ott says it's not heading to production unless there is enough rider interest.

Please, ask your local Fisher store about this bike!! This would be SO sweet!!!!!!

So I was able to sneak out at 14:00 for a ride on the Paragon around the Chapel Hill wet trail repeat loop. Stuff here will be wet until 2011.
I set a temp basal rate on my pump to the usual 55% reduction at 12:30, but was a little delayed rolling out on the start. As I was driving over to the Wellness Center to get rolling, Marcee gave me a shout. She was down for a ride for a little bit as well, as soon as she removed the decorations from her Superfly:
I road over to our predestined meeting place and we hooked up around 14:35.
Today was a mixed emotion ride for me. It was a turning of a page - more of a closing of a book.
This would be the last time we got to ride this loop together.
Marcee is moving this coming Wednesday and starting a new job down in Charlotte at the start of the new year.
Over the past two years we have ridden and raced tons of trails all overthe southeast together. However, this crappy weather loop in our home town is really where our friendship was forged. I mean come on... while everyone else is hanging on their indoor trainers at night in the cold rain it take a real friend to go ride through some muddy greenways and climb some rain soaked hills.
That loop has provided a TON of unforgettable experiences: the night we found that teenage couple, the falling off the wet and mossy wooden bridge, trying not to run over all those frogs, the night we road out with those peeps who were lost with no flash light, racing on the double track to we reach our LT (on base training days off course), the always changing cairns, finding the best "line" across the creeks (yeah, right), watching that tree lean lower and lower, repeatedly racing up the hills to our LT (on base training days off course), responding to a hypoglycaemic seizure, and many, many more...
Marcee has proven over and over to be a dedicated friend, a great training partner, and the world's absolute best teammate.
She just might be the world's greatest cycling ambassador, while at the same time being a wicked fast road and mountain bike racer. A mix that is extremely rare now a days.
Personally, Marcee has helped me and my riding in more ways then I can begin to count. She cemented in me a confidence on the bike that I was sometimes missing, and helped me to believe in what I could do for the diabetes community through cycling. I know Marcee always has my back. She is one of the greatest proponents of the Type1Rider organization, and has raised diabetes awareness in the triangle as much as anyone. I can not think of where to begin to thank her for ALL she has done.
Quite simply I would not be were I am today as a cyclist without her help.
Marcee will not only be missed by me, but by the entire cycling community here in central North Carolina.
I wish her the very best of everything she deserves as she begins this next phase of her life.
In the upcoming weeks, I will no doubt be out riding the wet weather hill repeat by myself at night. It won't be the same without you.
Do you have that train schedule?

My mom was taking care of the little men after work today, so I was able to go stright over to the UNC Wellness Center right after work.
Work has been really tough these past couple of weeks. Hopefully the new year sees the page turn and things start to get cleared up a little bit.
I lowered my basal rate to a 55% reduction as I left my building at 16:35. Was changed and on the bike rolling out by 17:25. BG at ride start was a near pre-exercise perfect 138.
REALLY cold tonight. I mean, COLD. Thermometer says 42, but it feels like 30.
Since the trails are indeed still wet (yes, I know I sound like a broken record here) I headed out onto the standard rain hill repeat loop. I was about done with the first round, when I remembered that there was the "Tour de Hills" road ride leaving Weaver Street Market at 18:20. Although I was on my mtb, I figured it might be ok to join them and hit the bigger climbs in town.
There were only a handful of folks on road bikes on tonight's ride (it was cold, and the Hour of Power indoor training ride was occuring at the Cat's Craddle), so that was to be expected. They were cool about me joining them though... so on we went.
I am not sure what was worse - the climbs or the temp due to wind chill as we descended. I would have to say the descends. :) I fell behind a little on the carb intake, and realized that I only took in 20 g of c's per hour, but managed to stay on the 16-20oz of Nuun hydration with no problem.
Near the end of the road ride, we rolled past one the of the dirt greenways I use on my rain repeat loop, so I peeled off and headed for home.
As I was heading out through forest theater double track, I found the Cairn gnomes where getting VERY creative:
Cool stuff, no? :)
Back to the car at the Wellness Center right around 21:45 or so, and the BG was tested at a 104. Doesn't get much better than that, eh? Little victories tonight. Hanging on the road ride, getting out on the coldest ride day to date, and having the blood sugar nailed. Sweet.
It was a great ride with as much vert as you can find around here in 2.5 hours. Thanks to the road guys (and gals) who lead me jump in with them.
When I hit the hay about 2 hours later, I was at a 106. No correction bolus taken, and the standard 20% reduction in the over nite basal rate following a ride.
Tomorrow is a recovery day as the legs are toast. Out!!!

Had a lousy day at the gig, but a GREAT time finishing the tree decorations with the family afterwards.
Once we got done, I headed to the UNC Wellness center to hit the weights for a little bit and then cruise up to campus for an interval/speed work run. Trails are soaked, and the weather is poor so....
I lowered my basal rate at 19:30 to a 45% reduction. With the shorter and more intense level of this workout I should see a BG rise, but wanted to reduce just to be sure. Was at the Wellness Center by 20:10. Had a quick chat with my friend Cassie about getting on a bike (no pressure - LOL), and then got to work at 80:25.
It took only about 20ish minutes to go through a supersetted lower body workout. Funny how after only a few consistent days of weight training, the body is starting to respond. I was able to add some poundage on each move, and it felt great!
Once done I hopped over to UNC Campus. Took 5 minutes to pack some "emergency funds" (M&Ms) and get my cold weather stuff on.
Ran easy over to my destination and training partner for the next 25 minutes:
A nice concrete 8 story stairway outside Kenan stadium. No real plan..
Sprint up, jog down. Repeat. Wait for 25 minutes to pass. I am getting old, although my ancient history track coach Mr. Mashur would have been proud. (Actually, he would have wanted me carrying a 45lb plate while I did it). :)
Once done.. cruised back to the car and set my basal rate back to a standard rate. Tested, and the BG was rolling a little high at a 192. I knew it would float, and next week I will not drop the basal rate as far pre-workout.
Bolused, and set a 90 min temp basal rate of 125% to correct.
Great fun actually, but man.... my legs feel like goo. :)

A cold day here in central NC, but at least one trail was finely open after the constant rain we have been getting. Not to worry though.... it should rain all day tomorrow... :(
Went and picked up the Christmas tree with the family in the morning. It was a ton of fun, and everyone enjoyed it. Put the tree up in the house (just standing up, not lights or anything), and then got ready to go for a ride.
Took the single speed Superfly over to the LCCP to put in some loops there and at the joining Umstead State Park. Not great fun, but open and rideable.
Dropped the basal rate to a 55% reduction about 13:15 and was out on the bike just about 60 mins later. I tested my BG right before pedaling away, and it was 92. I decided to lower my basal rate another 10%, and that worked out perfectly.
Had a fun ride, and ran into some friends I hadn't seen in a while. Especially stoked to ride with Dave for about 20 mins as he headed home. Also saw my old Top Fuel 69er along the way. Very happy to be out and pedaling today.
Had enough time to squeeze in about 2.5hrs and I was back at the car right before 17:00. Basal rate back to normal and BG at a crisp 119. Perfection!!
I stayed at the usual fuelling 40g of carbs along with 20oz of water with Nuun per hour.
Man it felt great to ride the Single Speed and to get out for a while. Riding has been spotty at best with the weather and some of the personal stuff we have going on. Thank goodness its the offseason... :)
Been eyeing this up as the opener for the 2010 season.... Pisgah 36

Everything turned out ok, and I appreciate the kind notes and txts from ALL!!
Was able to squeeze in 40 mins of strenght training today, but that is all I had in the tank. I am exhausted and looking forward to sleep.
Sometime.
Maybe.

During the afternoon, I was able to squeeze in 35 mins of strenght training, and a high temp mtb ride on the hill repeat loop. Felt great to sweat and have some wind in my face after being on planes and in airports for 14 hrs yesterday. :)
Looking forward to a crazy week. Very busy and stressful, but hopefully we will get everything out of the way before the holiday.

On my way to the meeting. Just as a side note, there is a Starbuck's every 1.1 miles... or something close to that... out here. My Nirvana!!
Thanks to everyone for the fantastic experience and conversation today. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the facility, and having a chance to interact with the staff.
Thank you all so much!!!!
Heading home early tomorrow, and I hear that the east is getting some form of a snow/ice storm. Not stressing it at all really, it will be a big adventure. Who knows were I will end up tomorrow night? Durham? Washington, DC? Cleveland? We will see... :)
03 December 2009
I headed to Los Angles today (via RDU -> IAD -> LAX) for a meeting tomorrow in Northridge.
Flight to Dulles was pretty eventful, as the pilot went all "Top Gun" about 30 seconds before landing due to "debris" on the runway. Luckily the flight to LAX wasn't nearly as active. LOTS of snow on the Rocky Mountains btw. Looked great from the air. (Although I couldn't get a pic as I was on the isle seat).
Got to drive on the four - o - five during rush hour too. Traffic is as they claim... crazy! It was pretty cool to experience it though. I mean, I am glad I don't do it everyday.... but still neat to see.

Great day in LA, and I am very STOKED for tomorrow. 17th story room, and a Starbuck's in the lobby of the hotel makes everything perfect. :)
