New Publication: The Complete Diabetes Organizer

A while ago I was contacted by Susan Weiner to contribute to a book she was writing.  I was honored to be asked to work with Susan, as she is VERY well known to members of the DOC via her leadership at dLife, her personal Susan Weiner Nutrition web site, or her work with the Diabetes Sisters organization.  Susan is a CDE, and CDN, and has her MS in Applied Physiology and Nutrition from Columbia University.

There is a great interview via with Susan a few weeks back via TuDiabetes.  Give it a look:

Susan was writing about something which I whole heartily agree with, which is organization and it's importance and impact on diabetes management.  Packing and preparing for Tour Divide took a fair amount of organization and planning, and it was an extreme privileged to be asked to convey that experience to this work.

The book was published by Spry Publishing, and is now available.  Please give it a look, as it is a great read with tons of helpful information to assist the individual or family of someone with diabetes.

Thank you again Susan for allowing me to contribute to this book.

Keep Choppin' everyone!!

January has absolutely just rocketed by.  And I do mean "rocketed".  More on that in a later post.  :)

Before I left to visit a good friend in Florida last week, I was very fortunate to be be interviewed by John Parkinson, Clinical Content Coordinator, at DiabetesCare.net.  We spoke on the phone for well over an hour, and he was kind enough to write up a two part article to be feature on their site.

Part one was published last week, and the second part will be release on Feb. 8th.

The first half talks about Tour Divide, early diagnosis, Type1Rider, and what I have planned on the bike for 2013.  The second half discusses projects we are working on, The Blue Heel Society, the DOC, and diabetes advocacy.

Part 1 can be found at DiabetesCare.net at the following url: http://www.diabetescare.net/content_upclose_detail.asp?id=446785

Thanks so much for all of the continued support, and KEEP CHOPPIN'!!!

NEW & Improved Insulin Nation is LIVE!

We first introduced you to Insulin Nation in our post  when we wrote "Our Team peruses up to one hundred individual News alerts & Sources worldwide each day to bring the very best FREE resources to our Friends & Followers. Recently we stumbled upon a NEW & unique source containing the BEST & most exhaustive reporting of items we have seen yet, relevant to all of us affected by diabetes. One of the taglines that truly fit's is Insulin Nation's claim of "seperating the noise from the news".

We are thrilled to share that just when we thought they could not make I.N. any better...they did! Along with a shiny NEW Platform & Interface, the new curation methodology being used will enhance the experience by updating MUCH faster than before, and presenting the Content in a very easy to read format.

We asked our dear friend ANDY HOLDER, AKA "IRON ANDY", VP of Collaborations to share an updated insight into what they now offer:

"Insulin Nation (http://www.insulinnation.com) is a SelfRx (http://www.selfrx.com) platform for the 6.5 million people in the US who take insulin, and who want and need reliable information.  Content centers on using technology as part of a care plan, the science behind cure-focused research and development, and connecting readers with each other and with the companies and institutions focused on diabetes.  The goal is to show how technology and science, combined with community, can improve outcomes and lower costs for people with diabetes."

The NEW 'Profiles/Interviews' Section, you will see all the GREAT offerings from previous Issues including the Story/Video about Blue Heel Society CEO/Co-Founder Tony Cervati and his 'Tour Divide' quest[s].

In the 'Resources' Section you will find an abundance of all the wonderful Organizations & much needed information to help enhance everyone affected by diabetes including the Blue Heel Society.

We hope you enjoy the NEW Insulin Nation as much as we do, and as stated by Editor-in-Chief Christopher Leach "Insulin Nation is more than a name or a logo.  It is a real community of people who will empower, encourage, and strengthen each other by being connected.  Supplying the connective tissue is our mission."

We certainly agree!!!

November 30, 2012

It certainly was a VERY HECTIC November! The celebration of World Diabetes Day on November 14th, and the 30 days of Diabetes Awareness Month kept us ALL hoping.  Everyday gave us the wonderful opportunity to actively advocate for Diabetes causes.  Some of the major highlights are:

Over at The Blue Heel Society we successfully participated in the 30 Day, 30 Posts National Health Blog Post challenge.

In response to being named one of the International Diabetes Federation World Diabetes Day Heroes, I wrote and published a blog post over at Insulet's Suite D site about us All Being Diabetes Heroes.  If you have a moment take a look at it here:

The book by Dr. Beverly Adler, My Sweet Life: Successful Men With Diabetes, that I was so grateful to be asked to contributed a chapter to was published.

A team of 10 of us raced under the Blue Heel Society banner at an event called Rebel Race in Haverhill, MA.  It was a 5k with 23 obstacles ranging from fire to barbed wire to 25 foot vertical walls.  The event made a donation to a diabetes charity in the name of team.  While there all of the team members met and spoke to a ton of people about diabetes. We will certainly be doing this, and other similar races, again!  Look for a blog entry on Suite D shortly!

I was fortunate enough to be nominated for the 2012 WEGO Health Activist Hero Award.  To be nominated and supported by members of the Diabetes Online Community is very humbling.  I am SO grateful.  Thank you!

In the middle of the month, I was asked to participate on a WEGO Roundtable discussion about Diabetes.  It involved a few of us on a call-in basis, and a very active Twitter, radio, and online interactive audience. A summary of the discussion can be found here: http://blog.wegohealth.com/2012/11/14/roundtable-recap-diabetes-awareness-month/.

The Blue Heel Society launched its IRL (In Real Life) Luminary Campaign.  The campaign provides free tools, aptly collected in The Shoebox, to people interested in leading advocacy campaigns in their local areas around the globe.  The response has been overwhelming, and The Luminaries have already scheduled events starting now.

Along the same lines, The Blue Heel Society was also nominated by our friends in the DOC for the 2012 WEGO Health Best Ensemble Cast Award.  All us involved with BHS where simply blown away by this honor.

From the bottom of our collective hearts, Thank You ALL for being a part of the most globally successful Diabetes Awareness Month ever!!

It is the hard work everyone of you do, the stories and experiences that each share, and the non-judgmental support and encouragement that we give each other that makes the DOC family so incredible.

Thank you.

Keep Choppin' everyone!!

One of the most challenging things I have ever done..... FACT.

Thank you so much Dr. Adler for letting me contribute with the other amazing authors in this book.

September 6, 2012

Last year I was very fortunate enough to be asked to contribute a chapter to Dr. Beverly Adler's second book, "My Sweet Life: Successful Men With Diabetes".  Dr. Adler published a very well received similar book "My Sweet Life: Successful Women With Diabetes" last year.

I was very surprised & grateful to be asked, and, of course, immediately said yes!

It was MUCH harder than I had anticipated it being, and took a while to come to grips with what I was going to write about.

Over the summer the chapters made their way through the various editors, and, I am very happy to share that the book is scheduled to be published this week!

It was a absolutely wonderful experience, and I wish to thank Dr. Adler for letting me contribute in my small way.  It was such an honor to be asked, and to be included with such a distinguished list of accomplished individuals.

June 5, 2012

A few weeks ago, we where contacted by the folks at Insulin Nation about The Type1Rider Organization being be featured in the June Issue (June 6th).  I was so humbled, proud, and honored, and we invite you to subscribe and visit this wonderful source of information as well.

The folks here at Type1Rider, and out sister organization The Blue Heel Society, peruses up to one hundred individual News alerts & Sources worldwide each day to bring the very best FREE resources to our Friends & Followers. Recently we stumbled upon a NEW & unique source containing the BEST & most exhaustive reporting of items we have seen yet, relevant to all of us affected by diabetes. One of the taglines that truly fit's is Insulin Nation's claim of "seperating the noise from the news".

Insulin Nation states "The digital diabetes magazine, is a community of people with diabetes sharing their stories and experiences for mutual benefit and support.  Every issue celebrates and promotes active, healthy living by and for insulin users, using video, text, graphics and interactive links..  Our unique social media curation tools collect and package the work of leading diabetes influencers, and our Resources pages feature and connect groups offering support to PWD of all ages.   Monthly subscriptions are free with email address registration."

We asked Chris Leach, the Editor-in-Chief, to tailor a unique message describing Insulin Nation for our Friends & Followers, and here is what he has to say:

From the Editor-in-Chief

Insulin Nation is a digital magazine for people with diabetes who use insulin.  It is the first part of a planned larger network of tools and resources that will connect the people and groups organized round diabetes, particularly type 1 PWD, with each other,  with clinical and scientific communities within the industry.

Insulin Nation's readers belong to and support hundreds of not-for-profit groups that help and connect people with diabetes.  Our intention is both to promote and support these organizations, and to serve as a clearinghouse and meeting place for them and their members.

We embrace and celebrate the individual missions, passions, and energy of all PWD in the communities we serve through video and text profiles. Our "Voices" section, updated daily, is the only real-time curated collection of comments and posts by more than 200 diabetes.social media influencers. Each issue profiles and links to multiple diabetes organizations and resources.  We are building commenting and sharing functions and a unique YouTube channel.

Insulin Nation is more than a name or a logo.  It is a real community of people who will empower, encourage, and strengthen each other by being connected.  Supplying the connective tissue is our mission.

May 31, 2012

It's the last day in May, and things sure have been moving at a quick pace. :)

Today I finished and submitted my contribution chapter for a book being published later this year. I will release more details as I am allowed, but it is a follow up to book released last year. I am super excited and honored to be part of this project, and can not wait to be able to discuss it further!

When originally contacted about it, I thought it would be a fairly easy task to write a 20 pages or so. Piece of cake. However, it turned out, to be MUCH more difficult than I thought. I learned a lot about how hard it must be for writers to really sit and be inspired to tell a story - even one they might know quite well.

Again, I am humbled and honored to be involved with this project, and I just cannot wait to see it in its competed form.

When I got home tonight I found a page of parts I ordered from RAM Mounts on my doorstep. I had been waiting for these in order to attached the GPS to my bike in a way that has it out of the way and easy to quickly glean information off of it.

Looking through their online catalog, and taking some measurements her at home, I made a guess.

Turns out to worked perfectly. I needed to make a little modification to make the mounting strap snug up on the aero bar, but my Delorme PN-60 fits right between the aero bars without touching me at all when I am in that position.

Better to be lucky then good right? :)

This shot makes the device look bigger than it is, but it was like it was made for this position. I will carry the paper maps as backup, and just be able use the GPX files for TD loaded into the device. Should save a good amount of time from fiddling with the maps.

I am still working through some of the usage issues since the upgrade to the new firmware. Nothing is malfunctioning, I am just not familiar enough with the features yet.

Back to the manual.....

Going to try and get the Superfly to Trek Raleigh tomorrow so they can determine what the blazes is all the racket from the rear wheel. Probably going to need new bearings for the bottom bracket, but maybe that can wait just a little bit longer.

Hopefully.

Keep Choppin'!
