Today was my last day to get on the bike before this weekend's JDRF mtb clinic.  Another stunning day for a ride.  I shot this pic at 17:30 just before leaving on my Superfly.

At 16:25 I set my tmp basal rate to a 70% reduction, and grabbed a quick 15g C snack, figuring I would be in good shape to start pedaling in an hour.

Drove to the UNC Wellness Center and got changed by 17:05.  I tested at that time, just as quick check, and was pretty annoyed to find myself at a 66.  Of course instinct would be to pound a large number of Cs as fast as possible.  I knew that this would be a short term gain, long term loss, as it would undoubtedly lead to me running high during the ride.

I just took in some more quick simple Cs via a soft drink, and then rolled out on the bike at 17:30 sharp. I stayed disciplined and kept to the regular 20-30g Cs per hour rate.  I did fall behind on the Nuun infused H2O, and only consumed 30oz for the ride.

I did some hill repeat work, before riding over to Keenan Stadium for some "extra curricular"  training.  Did a complete loop of stairs while carrying the bike CX style.

Once done here, I road over to Wilson Park to try a catch up with Greg Smith from the Tricyclists.   He had just returned from a trip to Columbus OH and I wanted to see how it went.

Was there for about 45 mins chatting, so I did a quick 1.25u bolus.

Once I got rolling again I put my lite on, and ripped through Forest Theater and back up Franklin Street, before heading back to the car.

As I was decending through Chapel Hill, I set my basal rate back to normal.

I have been struggling with my cycling shoes for a couple of weeks now, and they were completely acting up again tonight.  After new inserts, a cleat feet, new socks, and new pedals it is just time to hang these up.  They are good for 90 mins or so, but then turn ugly.  Hot spots, especially on the right foot.

Mission for tomorrow is to buy a new pair of the 'ole reliables'.  Hard to be an endurance cyclist when your shoes make you want to hang your bike up after 2 hours. ;(  I was really, really annoyed about this when I got back to the car.

BG was at a 67 at 20:24 when I finished up.  That bolus during the break was a hair to high.  Not bad though, considering.  It surely wasn't optimal, but if I was still going to be riding it is easier to fix, and less damaging, then say a 247.  LOL!

Want to give a shout to my friend and Crewmate Mark Carney as he heads to Utah tomorrow for a race this weekend. Giv'em hell.

Set my standard over night post ride temp basal of 75% when I hit the hay.

New shoes, and a meeting at school tomorrow.  Can't wait! :)

I will be at Colonel Beatty Park just outside of Charlotte, NC this Saturday joining Cricket Butler from TeamUp4Type1 for a JDRF hosted mountain bike clinic.  This is the second year I will be leading this clinic, and it promises to be a great time.

If interested in attending, please visit the JDRF Charlotte Office Outreach Events page, or TeamUp4Type1.com.

I can't wait until Saturday!!

Up fairly early (for a Sunday) as I was jumping on a group ride at 09:00.  I was feeling very tired, and not much like eating this morning so BG managment today was going to be a little more difficult than normal.

My BG was at 155 at 08:02 and I took my basal rate to a 70% reduction, and made a very slight (.1u) correction.

I was meeting up with some TORC folks for a pre-ride of the upcoming Chapel Hill Adventure Race course with a group of folks registered for the event.   These include 29er Crew teammate Mark and his wife Erin.

I was at the Seawell Elementary School meeting site at 08:30, and we were prepared for a 50 mile ride with the group.  I packed my hydration pack since the plan was for a longer ride without the ability to refill the bottles along the way. The 10 of us rolled out of the school parking lot a few minutes after 09:00 (pretty good for a group ride).  :)

We all had a good time riding through the Chapel Hill North trails and then we headed over to Duke Forest (via a short road ride) to check out the possible check points over there.

I arrived back at the starting point approx 3.5 hours later.  I headed towards town to spend another 90 minutes doing some hill work.

I was able to stay pretty true to 20-30g of carbs and 20oz of Nuun enhanced water per hour.  BGs were great throughout the ride with tested results of 83, 121, and 133.

About 20 minutes away from the car, I set my basal rate back to it's normal rate of delivery.

My ride ended at 14:22 with a blood glucose of 138.  A fantastic 5+ hours of riding on Supefly.

I took 5u of post ride bolus to stop norm BG spike.

BGs ran in the high 70s the rest of the day.  When I hit the hay at 21:36 I was at 74.  I dropped the post ride over nite temp basal to 80%.  I also took in some simple Cs for a little boost.

I actually spent more hours in the saddle this weekend than sleeping.  I really need to fix that.  :)

After a miserable day at work, I did a last minute escape on the Fixie just before 18:30.  Since it wasn't planned, i didn't have time to set the temp basal rate down on the pump for more than 20 minutes before leaving home.  I set the rate to 50% as I figured this would be a nice lite cruise.

On the way over to the paved section of the American Tobacco Trail I quickly ate a performance bar as well.

The ATT was pretty crowded, and I had a great time.  It had been a while since I had been on the fixed, and I had forgotten what a simplistic joy it is to ride.

Rolled about 20 miles when all was said and done.

When I got back into the driveway at 17:44 I set the basal rate back to normal, and the BG was an 84.  Nailed.  :)

Looking forward to a long ride on great weather on Saturday.

Daily Carb Intake Bolused For: 195g

After work on Wednesday, I headed over to park at the UNC Wellness Center to head out for a ride. As I let the office I dropped my basal rate by 60%, and figured to be on the bike an hour later.

The weather was absolutely picture perfect and this was the first day that I really noticed a change in the humidity levels heading out for a ride. It's getting dark pretty early again too, and I spoke with George Scott about night riding becoming the norm very soon. Foreshadowing?

As planned I rolled out on my Superfly Singlespeed planning for 2hrs of higher interval training a couple if ticks before 17:30.

Did a hot lap through the more popular trails and headed for home. About 20 mins from the Wellness Center I set my basal rate back to normal.

The sun was just beginning to cast long shadows when I got back into the parking lot. BG was a spot on 107, and I bolused only 3u to prevent a post ride spike. I noticed I hadn't consumed a lot of calories during the ride (due to pace) so less post ride intake was needed.

As I unpacked my jersey pockets, I began to panic. No really. My iPhone had fallen out while I was in the trail. Oh man...

So although this is just a jail-broken 3G with no data plan, it dud gave some live connections to a few email accts, Facebook, and Twitter. I usually have it passcode locked, but while riding (since I have gloves on) I unlock it.

I quickly called a friend on the iPhone 4 I don't ride with and talked her through changing the acct passwords for the exposed apps. I then logged on to my service provider and deactivated that phone.

I thought about the specific places on trail I might have dropped it. Best bet was to drive closer to one of those places, and run the trail with a light to check it out.

After a quick 15 min car ride, I looked at the most probable spot. Nadda.

I figured I needed to ride the trail again and search for it. Only problem was insulin on board.

I suspended insulin delivery, and ate an energy bar sans bolus. Took 10 mins to load up with the lights and get out. Again.

About 45 mins later I found it! Under a log near a series if log crossings I had j-hopped earlier. Whew!

Felt REALLY fortunate to have found it in the dark under a log. :)

Got back to the car at 21:10 and re-activated insulin delivery. BG was again at a near perfect 107.

Sweet!!

I only took 1u of post ride bolus at this point.

A great example of pump flexibility!! Oh yeah, and a heck of a lot of good trail karma.

Some days are just harder being a diabetic than others. No particular known or identifiable reason - it is what it is.

Today was one of those days where "The D" needed a little more attention and a little more manipulation to get it to do what I wanted.

It was a super busy day at work, and I felt off all day. No sickness symptoms, just not at top dead center. Just off. I am probably just tired as my sleep pattern has been atrocious for the past month or so.

Had a dentist appointment first thing, and then ran through a serious of 3 meetings in a row with just a small sliver of time in there to grab a bite. The afternoon wasn't much better in terms of scheduling. :)

At 16:00 I tested at a 71. Not optimal for an activity later in the afternoon, so I ate a Snickers Marathon bar with out a bolus. That'll fix it.

As I left the office at 16:30 I set a temp basal rate to a 60% reduction in preparation of a mountain bike ride an hour later. My BG was at a 60. Hmmmmm.... Not what I was expecting. I grab another 30g of Cs from a soft drink. Yeah, that'll fix it.

Also make a mental note to adjust the afternoon basal rate in my standard weekday basal pattern. Needs to drop slightly.

By 17:15 I am changed and ready to go. What? BG is a 51! Eh??

Now I'm a little annoyed. The weather is spectacular and I AM going for a ride. (I hear "The D" laughing at me at this point, which sours my mood a bit more).

I figure I have enough Carbs in my body that a recovery is imminent so I decide to stay with the plan.

I do adjust my basal to a 70% reduction, and then suspend insulin for 60 minutes. It's a little bit of a gamble, but I am betting that the BG begins to creep up even while I'm riding.

At 17:30 sharp I'm pedaling my Single Speed out of the UNC Wellness Center parking lot.

30 minutes later I'm at the trail head in Carrboro and do another BG check. 62. Slight progress.

I fortify my standard liquid nutrition with half a performance bar and press on.

15 minutes later I'm turning to head up a gravel road and literally almost run into this guy:

He doesn't even flinch. I watch him and two other deer for about 5 minutes, before riding by within 8 feet of the trio. They just don't seem to even acknowledge I'm there. It was pretty funny.

One last on ride BG test at 80 mins in. 75. Still creeping along, but I'll take it. I finish off the 2nd half of the bar, and the first of the 20oz bottles with my custom mix of maltodextrin and Nuun.

Not ideal but I'm having a decent ride, so I'll take it. I leave the pump in suspended delivery status and keep on truckin'.

I was just heading back through Chapel Hill as the sun was disappearing on the horizon. The sky was a cool mix of pink and orange. The pictures are lame, but I was taken back a bit by the stark colors in the sky and on the buildings.

I was only about 20 minutes of ride time away from the car when I re-enabled insulin delivery , and set my basal rate back to normal.

Got back to the car at 19:48 and the BG was at 85. Not great, but the gamble worked. :)

I took a 4.75u post ride bolus, as I know the BG spike is coming especially after no insulin intake for 2 hours.

It turned out to be a really good ride.

I didn't eat much after I got home, as I just didn't have any interest. This might cause a small issue overnight, but I will be setting a over nite temp basal of 80%.

Hopefully that is low enough.

Sometimes "The D" just needs a little more hand holding in order to get a ride in. Today was most certainly one of those days. :)

10 September 2010

I drove to Charlotte, NC yesterday and was fortunate enough meet some very caring, dedicated, and fantastic people, while also having a great visit with my friend Cricket Butler.  It was a fantastic morning!!

On the way home I took a little time to pay a visit to my MUCH missed "T2" Marcee at her new (well, it HAS been what? 8 months or more already? Wow.) gig at The Right Gear in Kannapolis.  It was so great to see her, if only for a short time.  Chapel Hill isn't the same with out M!

While there I was lucky enough to meet owner Jim O'Brien.  I want to personally thank Jim for taking time out of his day to show me around the unbelievable items he has in the shop, and to share some of his cycling related stories.

The Right Gear is unreal!  It is a must visit for anyone who loves cycling, both past and present.  I only shot a few photos, but the history Jim has hanging in the shop is unbelievable!  There are so many items of historic proportions lined up right behind the new for sale bike racks.  I was simply blown away.

I literally could have spent all day there just staring and drooling over stuff.

Again, thanks Jim.  See you again in a few weeks Marcee??

Had to hustle home, as it is just me and the boys this weekend.

Yeah, I heard that laugh of both humor and worry. I am really looking forward to hanging with the boys and doing "men" stuff.  We might even stay up to 8:30pm one night.  oh boy!  ;)
