Looks like this will be the last ride before the race on Sunday, as it is supposed to rain and be cold almost all week.

Feeling better than yesterday, but still cool with the decision not to race yesterday. It would have laid me up all week for sure.

Just got out on the Rig around Chapel Hill for a couple of hours. Not working too hard, just getting some time in.

So I wake up at 04:30. Little low, so I have a drink of regular soda and get back to bed. Lay there for 20 minutes WIDE awake. Check outside temp... 44 degrees. Cool. Lets go for a ride.

Set the basal rate on my pump down to its normal 55% reduction at 05:00 sharp. Quietly got packed up and out the door with a bike. Left the UNC Wellness Center at 06:15(ish) on the Rig. Trails where wet, so I just did some hill repeat and double track work. I wanted to do an easy day and watch the sun rise as I am racing tomorrow in Sanford.

Set my pump back to normal as I was heading back to the WC at 09:15. Was stoked when I got back there.

Headed home and got ready to take J to the Monster Truck show in Raleigh at 11:15.

We had fun there, and he was just excited to see the trucks and the spectacle. It is a pure joy to see that. :)

Since my ride was earlier today, I didn't set my basal rate down when I went to bed. Weather for tomorrow looks ok. Cold, but OK.

I am feeling like I am running a fever, and not feeling that great overall. Thought of racing tomorrow doesn't sound that great. We'll see how I am tomorrow.

January 23, 2009

Didn't get a training ride in after work today, but did go for a ride
with J! We ripped through the snow (the little bit thats left) in the
yard and played a little ball.

Going to workout and try to run and grab a cycle class tomorrow at the
Wellness Center.

There is a 42 mile mountain bike race on Sunday I am supposed to do.
It's 13 miles of single track and 29 miles of gravel and paved roads.
High is targeted about 40, and with the rain we are getting tomorrow,
I am on the fence. I'll ride one way or the other I'm sure. :)

Will prob do it as part of my training for this week, and try to
forget it's a race. Also might give mean chance to check the fit of
the Superfly, and let me put the Navigator to a serious test.

Taking J to see monster trucks tomorrow so that should be fun watching
him be sooo amped!!

Out.....

After a wild day in the office, I rolled over to Cary to jump in on one of Cycling Spoken Here's indoor training ride sessions.

Got over there a little earlier, so I found sometime to pick up the Superfly which was getting some slight "tweaking" for the upcoming two weeks.

Once I got that done, I still had about an hour so I threw on my running shoes and did a mild paced run around Cary. Didn't go for too, too long.. but still got about 51 minutes in.

Once I got back I grabbed my fixed gear and my trainer and got in the line with 26 or so other cyclists. It was a great workout and a heck of a lot of fun!!

After class we had a short 30 minute nutrition discussion. I also got to me a very nice woman who is a Type 1 who is also a cyclist. Was great talking to her as she has 43 years of diabetic experience. Amazing person, and in GREAT shape!!

Not sure if I make this ride next week (due to the race on Feb 1st), but it was a BLAST!! Thanks to everyone at CSH for running this program throughout the winter months.

Someone pulled a fire alarm at work...

How, what, 3rd grade?

I have been sitting on this for a while, but the official notification went out late this evening. So....

It is with a ton of pride and happiness that I have been named to the Gary Fisher 29er Crew Race Team!

For more info on the 29er Crew, check out http://www.29ercrew.com. (2008 still up, but 2009 info should be up in a couple of weeks). Also, you can follow link from Fisher Bikes at http://wwww.fisherbikes.com.

The visibility that being part of this team will provide diabetes and diabetic athletes is near immeasurable! Thanks to Travis Goodman and Travis Ott for affording me the opportunity to represent Gary Fisher and the Big Wheel 29er movement!

The 29er Crew team kit is pretty wicked:

I love the roman numerals! Too cool!

What about Type1Rider and racing as a identified diabetic athlete? Well, I have been afforded the option of wearing the Type1Rider kit with 29er Crew and Fisher logos on it. One of the 29er logos is on the sleeves , and another on the side panel and shorts.

So, as shown in this final proof, I will be campaigning in the following this year:

Marcee (the best training partner in the world, and Cycling Spoken Here staff member) is also racing under the 29er Crew umbrella this year. I am VERY excited to be traveling to events and racing with her as team mates.

To be truthful, I cannot express how grateful and humbled I feel to be given this great platform to raise diabetes awareness and provide encouragement for those who suffer from it.

Some will say I am making an overly big deal over this announcement, but I don't feel that way. I never even dared to dream that I would have a chance like this during my cycling "lifetime".

Thanks for EVERYONE for believing!

Yeah, I was starving today. Ok, now that the elephant in the room has been acknowledged..... Also, I run low for a bit and lots of the carbs are recorded in chasing that down. Still makes me feel horrible though.

Was able to sneak out on the Superfly at Lake Crabtree County Park between rain showers today. Didn't have a ton of time, as I needed to get some work done on a new mountain bike.

She bought a 2008 Trek Top Fuel SSL from Marcee last week, and we need to get a few items switched over.

Anyway, I dropped the Superfly off at CSH for a once over in preperation of two events (races) in the next two weeks. First races of 2009... Can't wait to get the ball rolling.

Looks like snow this coming week.. so that will be great. At least I can have fun playing with the boys if it is deep enough. We'll see.....

Hey! A small miracle today... it warmed up enough to go for a ride. And, as an added bonus, it was not raining. Crazy, eh?

Got out on the HiFi for about 3 hours this afternoon. It was GREAT!! That's all I can say! Just WONDERFUL to ride my bike in the sun and have a blast doing it. Maybe spring really isn't too far away. :)

AHHHHHH.... when your ride starts in the dark at 21 degrees... you are doomed. So, at least I get points for trying.

Attempted to ride the HiFi for a road only hill repeat session. All up would have been better, since I couldn't survive the downhill wind chill.

I guess my circulation isn't as unaffected as I thought, since I can't remember my hands hurting so bad due to the cold. Couldn't squeeze the brake levers without pain. Not discomfort, but actually pain.

Nothing else to report. Depressing.... not too happy today.

After work, tried to roll out on the Single Speed Rig in Chapel Hill. Um, the weather here is really getting me down. It is cold as snot here, and the trails are basically frozen over, so no single track tonight.

Road hill repeats and double track. Yeah. :(

I know its not as cold as other places in the country, but we just aren't use to it here in da South. :)

Headed all the way down to Sanford, NC to get to a "drier" trail system for the Cycling Spoken Here Sunday shop mtb ride.

Trail was a little wet, but it did dry out pretty quickly as the temps went up.

Ride start was slotted for 09:30, but got started a little late. I did set my pump down a little late as well, so it worked out ok. Road the Rig today, since I wasn't sure what the trail conditions where going to be.

Ride was fun as hell, and K was able to drive down an ride with us. A big PLUS!!

Stayed fairly on the fueling and hydration plan.

After the ride was over, we literally raced back to Durham. I got about 5 minutes at home to change, and quickly headed over to the RTP for a 5 year TdC planning session.

Meeting was great and very productive.

Got home just in time for dinner.

Whew.

Finally the rain and sniffles stopped so time to get a ride in today!!

After running some errands with the boys in the AM, I headed out to Umstead park for some base training. There are no singletrack trails that are dry enough to ride anywhere, so its dirt/gravel double track for a couple of hours. Yea.

Was fun though as I got to ride with some folks from CSH later on in the afternoon.

Stayed on a good fueling schedule, but got way behind on my hydration. I cramped up near the end of the afternoon, but was able to ride through it and get back.

Had a birthday party for my youngest who turned 1 on the 8th. It was a good time! Tacos, cupcakes, and family. Perfection!!

Got an email from Mt. Borah today with the first layout proof of the 2009 Type1Rider jerseys. Not only do they look AMAZING, the 3D technology Mt. Borah uses to display it is out of this world.

The proof is 98% correct. The zipper will not be visible and there will be slight changes to a minor error, but generally this is it.

I am so psyched with how it looks, and want to give a big thank you to 8Dot Graphics for doing such a great job!!

Been raining here a ton, and everyone in my household (me included) is sick. Probably not going to get to ride much during the week, but hopefully everyone will recover!

Got out a little late today on the Rig for a couple of hours. I road the Superfly yesterday at Lake Crabtree County Park for about 4 hours or so. Just needed a little saddle time today.

Had a great ride, and saw a bunch of cool stuff. We had sustained 35mph winds with gusts up to 45mph all day yesterday. Saw this carnaige right on UNC campus:

Then when I was about 200 feet into the single track, I looked up and saw these guys standing about 15 feet in front of me:

Ride was just awesome, and the Rig running tubeless now, is just a blast to ride.

I was pretty close to right on the carb intake and hydration pattern. I did fall behind some on the H20, but it was cool especially when the sun went down.

It has been GREAT being off from work and having the chance to get some riding in during daylight hours. :) A big switch.
