Got in VERY early this morning, and work was a little bit of struggle today. Lots of caffeine on tap.

After I got home from the gig, I was able to take a few moments to relax and think about the great trip to Vegas this past weekend.

The overwhelming thought that keeps popping in my head, is what a wonderful group of people make up the Smiths-Medical diabetes division. Many of them have diabetes, or family members that suffer from the disease. They are all very competent, motivated, and dedicated to what they do. Also, it doesn't take long to see that they work together very well together as a unit. Sometimes very difficult to achieve in today's business world, especially considering how spread out across different territories they all are.

I was truly honored to be a guest in their company at the meeting, and have been invited to speak to the group while there.

My presentation had been pushed up to 7:30-9:00am Vegas time, and I was a little nervous about speaking at that time in the morning. But hey, once I found that the hotel Starbucks opened at 6am, I figured it would be all good to go. :)

I asked both K and my fellow Type1Rider Nancy to call me at 6am to make sure that I was up. It turned out that neither call was necessary as I was awoken at 5:15am by a call from work. The production database was down. I just figured, hey its Monday... what's another thing to do this morning, eh? Truthfully I am not sure I was much help, as I didn't have my laptop, so I could only connect via my iPhone. Anyway...

Got to the coffee shop at 7:10, and to the meeting room a few minutes later. Since I was a little nervous, I did lower my basal rate the traditional 20% when I ordered my beverage. Yes, I have a "Nervous" temp basal rate stored in my Cozmo.

The presentation started at 7:40am, and ran a little over until 9:20. The group was awesome, and they asked some great questions that spawned some good discussion. I think that overall the presentation went very well. Some of the attendees did take the time to speak with me afterward, and that is always a good feeling. Hopefully, the Smiths-Medical folks feel I delivered as expected.

I am hoping the talk went well enough to have the opportunity to make some announcements later regarding doing some more work with Smiths-Medical. Cross your fingers and stay tuned! :)

Tried to jump on an earlier flight to get home, but was denied. My flight left Nevada at 3:55 pacific time, and the landed at 11:25pm eastern time. Not a bad flight, and the desert looks amazing from the air. I set my basal rate back to normal from the 15% addition for my flying setting about 15 minutes before landing.

Got a very busy next couple of days, but more on that later!!

Out!

Finally my ride home.

In airport. Couple of hours 2 go.

Found this in C gates area. :)

Heading home?

I got to the airport way early so I could try to go stand by on the
flight heading out 5 hrs earlier. No dice.... Airport is crazy busy.
Here is the Southwest area.

We're not at RDU anymore. More on a good morning, and my presentation
at the sales meeting later.

7am. It blurry and a little far away, but there are folks in the
hotel casino.

A very busy but fantastic day

Today was long and tiring (I am back in my room and crashing after
about 20 hrs), but it was fantastic.

Got a good resistance training workout in, followed by a 6 mile
(approx) run. Tried to reach the base of a mountain range I can see
out my window. It's a LOT farther than it looks!

The highlight of the day though, was the opurtunity to meet some of
the Smiths-Medical staff. While speaking with them I was really blown
away by both their knowledge and dedication, and their coherence as a
unit. It is easy to see they have a special group of people, doing
some impressive work.

I am speaking at 7:30am Vegas time, and I am really looking forward to
it. Truthfully, I am a bit nervous, but once I get started it should
go as planned. There is about 30 minutes built in to the end, and I am
SURE there will be some great questions.

After the talk I will be racing back to the airport to make my journey
home.

Haven't seen the strip or dropped any quarters into the casio here at
the resort. I promise to do so tomorrow. :)

My room view

Arrived

I got to Vegas at 10:15 local time. Plane was FULL, but flight was ok.

Right after getting in the airport you see the slots.

Got the button on my shorts caught by somebody's luggage strap, and it
broke. So I was forced to buy a cheesy Harley pin. I'm still laughing.

Off to check in and EAT.

All Packed Up for Vegas

I am all packed up and ready to head to Las Vegas for my speaking
engagement at the Smiths-Medical national sales meeting.

It's going to be a fast and busy trip, but it should be enjoyable
(well you know, after dealing with the usual airline industry hassle. )

I wanted to test the remote blog updating procedure one more time, so
I can update with photos during the trip. Can't wait to tell y'all
about the experience!

Just a short ride in a tropical depression here in middle NC. :) Out on the Kona for mostly road and double track work for 80 minutes. Needed to ride some, as it actually wasn't POURING like it had in the past two days.

I am excited to be heading to Las Vegas on Sunday to speak at the Smiths-Medical national sales meeting.   Never been to Vegas before, so it will be a great chance to take some of it in.  The Cozmore Insulin Technology System is in the Smiths-Medical product family, and they asked me to speak about Type1Rider, my experience as a Type 1 for 32 years, pump therapy, and, specifically, how I use the Cozmo for life, training, and racing.

I will be updating the blog as I travel, so keep an eye out for more frequent updates for the next couple of days.

Interbike has been going on in Vegas (coincidence?), and ends tomorrow.  Some really interesting new stuff.   Highlights (for me anyway) include:

Mega light Race Face speed crankset

Chris King Bottom Bracket (an idea PJ and I came up with about 14 months ago btw) :)

And a my new 5.5 replacement?

And for those who emailed, no.  The monkey DOESN'T have a name.  Yet.  :)

Turned my basal rate back to normal rate on the way back to the Wellness Center.

Felt really good, especially considering that I dug a TON yesterday to intall the drainage system on one side of our house. It took all day, but I think it will make a huge difference. I hope. :)

Here is a very, very small thumbnail of some of the changes you can expect to see on the kit this year:

Lots of changes. Hopefully I will be able to post the whole thing, and make some announcements, when I get back from Vegas next week. Did I not mention Vegas? :)

Home projects day is tomorrow, so out on the bike today. Rolled out of the Wellness Center at 12:40, after setting my basal down to a 55% reduction about an hour earlier.

Took the Top Fuel along a hill repeat loop in Chapel Hill, then rolled through the local trail system. I was surprised the trails where still kinda wet, so I stayed on the double track then headed back to do some more hill repeat work. Weather was perfect!

Stayed on the usual 20g every 30 minutes via a PowerBar Gel, and 16oz of water. Worked great!

Good ride. Check out the pump details.

Been VERY busy trying to get some things nailed down for next year. Stuff coming along, but lots of phone calls and emails.

Have some major projects around the house I need to finish up this weekend, so I am hoping to get at least one day on the bike in.

I DO have some AMAZING great announcments coming soon, but everything is still only 90% done. :)

I will post when I can.

It rained ALL DAY today, so I headed out on the Madone after work. Set the basal rate to a 55% reduction at 16:52, and was on the bike leaving the Wellness Center at 17:59.

Stayed well hydrated, but, since I was riding at a slightly higher pace than normal I didn't take in as much fuel. 1 PowerBar Gel per hour.

Had a SUPER time riding in the rain on the road bike. I don't ride road nearly enough, and forget how much fun it can be!!

At 19:30 I set the basal rate back to normal.

I found this picture in the newspaper today. To me this is a monumental photo and article. For years I have been asking "have you seen the albino deer in the trail system?". All I get is bazaar looks back. People began to think they where my imaginary friends. :) But HA! Evidence!!

When I went to bed I did set my basal rate down 10% for six hours.

After I surprised K with the change of the front door "knob" and the addition of some new house numbers on our newly painted front door, I was able to get out for a little bit exercise in the afternoon.

A little bit different of a workout today, as I took the Kona in for some love from Jeff at the shop and then ran back home. I will pause a minute for those who fainted, to recover. :)

Made a couple of pump basal mods starting at 13:18, as my start time kept creeping up. I was finally out on the Kona in my running shoes by 15:03. Just a very short ride to get the bike to the shop.

About 20 minutes from finishing the run, I set my basal rate back to normal.

I was laughing to myself as I was doing some tempo thru a neighborhood back to the UNC Wellness Center. My heart rate was getting shot up as I sprinted two light poles, and then walked one. I thought about high school track, and I could, for a moment, still here Coach Mashur yelling to pick it up.

As I got back to the car, and began to cool down, I thought of how much fun it is to suffer through tough high intensity workouts. I love it! Not normal. :)

A very slight 10% reduction for 6 hours before I hit the hay.

Day 2 with just me and the boys at home. I am actually doing great, and we are having fun.

I was able to get out for ride at noon today. Took the Kona to LCCP to ride that system, and then Umstead and "Hubcap". Was trying to keep the HR down in the base zone, but riding the SS that got away from me in some spots. :)

Set my basal rate to its normal ride level of a 55% reduction at 11:08 in preparation of the 12:00 start time. Was at a 73, and ate 60 grams of carbs at 11:30 so I bumped my basal rate down another 20% when I rolled out of the parking lot at 12:08.

Since it had been a week out of the saddle I felt a little stale for bit, but that quickly went away. Met up with DirtDawgBiker at Umstead at 12:30, and we had a fun ride.

Weather was a bit warmer than I thought it would be, and I ate a little less than I normally would have. Consumed 1 PowerBar Gel per hour, and about 12oz of H20.

At 14:50 I reset my normal basal rate, and was off the bike about 10 minutes later. I was running high at 210 - so I bolused and marked the basal rate up for an hour to get back on normal levels.

Before bedtime, I did set my basal rate to its normal rate of 80% of normal for 6 hours.

Sorry haven't posted all week. I have just been in "shut down" mode since the race on Sunday. I am STILL (yes) fighting my cold, and am unbelievably tired and run down.

One of the many bothersome side effects of diabetes, is how long it takes me to kick colds, bugs, and the flu. I have been fighting this for over 2 weeks, and even took antibiotics to help. Frustrating!

Figured the week off the bike would be helpful, especially with a CRAZY October coming down the pike. Of course I feel like a slug, but that is a complete other topic.

I am going to try to ride some tomorrow - just some base work for a couple of hours. Then begin to pick it up during the week to get back up to speed (no pun intended).

Have been working on some things behind the scenes. New jersey design is underway - which will go along with a new, premier sponsor announcement. The final details are being worked out, but I will put out a press release as soon as the ink dries. :) Actually the kit isn't completely new, just some mods to layouts and such.

LOTS of events and things related to that upcoming announcement, so make sure to stay tuned!

Kerri Sparling is one of my favorite diabetes related bloggers. On my list of top 5 people I would like to have dinner with some day. Anyway, I read this the other day on her site and I wanted to share: http://sixuntilme.com/blog2/2008/09/diabetes_for_the_day3.html. I think its a great writeup for the non-diabetic trying to understand a small fraction of life with the disease.

On a completely different subject, one of my friends who works at the shop (both to remain nameless) came upon a new helmet release announcement from Lazer Helmets. He looked at it and it reminded him of certain face. So he modified the ad, and sent it to the distributor and the manufacture. When I saw it, I laughed until I was crying. It really does look like Gene:

Gotta roll!

Still an amazing race course (one of my favorites), and a wonderful day anyway.

A special congratulations to Marcy for being on the winning Co-Ed Duo Team!

Tropical storm Hanna came through here last night and into this
morning, causing some flooding and disrupting our high speed inet
service. Oh yeah, and the power for a while. Hence, I am posting this
update via my iPhone. Hopefully the mobile blogger update technology
works as advertised.

Hanna dropped 4.91 inches of rain on us here, but nothing 110 miles
away in Charlotte. I'm heading there early tomorrow morning for the
SE Regional Endurance Championships. I even had to dig out the USA
Cycling license for this one. :)

I am still coughing up goo, but my last dose of antibiotics was
tonight. So physically I am not sure what to expect. Could be ok,
could feel terrible. No idea. I'm sure I'll be a little rusty as I
was only able to ride once this past week.

I might try a slightly higher basal rate than I normally would run for
a typical endurance event, as I think the pace will be fast. Maybe a
55% reduction for the first 45 minutes then raise it to a 40%
reduction based on heart rate, pace, and BG levels? I think about it
and deceide on the fly. Insulin pumps are awesome huh?

Also, I did insert another Cleo 90 infusion set tonight as a spare..
Just in case. Hopefully not needed, but you know if I didn't I would
need it! :)

Weather should be good, and I am looking forward to a good day on a
great trail!

As some may have heard, TS Hanna is going to pay us a visit tomorrow and Saturday. I am not sure how much rain the race site in Charlotte is suppesed to get, but we are expecting 2-4" here. Course might be a complete mess, or might be bone dry. We'll see! :)

First day back at work after spending the last 4 days at home sick as I could be. Man. Got no riding in at all. Had the world's worst head and chest cold. I couldn't sleep since when I laid down I just coughed constantly.

Feeling better today, but only about 55%.

Road with the oldest after school for about 10 minutes, and I was BEAT.

Yes... 4 days to the Rivers Edge MTB Marathon SE Championships. Great. :(
